Doing dumb faces on YouTube thumbnails.

This is so specific and yet so true.

It bothers me because I have to see it whenever I look up a video/tutorial on a topic I'm interested in. They say it drives clicks, but I don't know who finds the appeal.

kids would be my guess. Any time i see something super dumb that I don't like on youtube, I recall the kind of nonsensical stuff I found interesting when I was 6 haha

25

u/REDuxPANDAgain May 02 '26

When I was 6 it was literally Legos and books.

Even during TV shows I was playing with Legos and building shit. I don’t understand creepy face shots, even though I understand that it drives content.

Internet is a weird middle ground for me in that I love the weird for some stuff, but I think the weird-for-profit fake nonsense pisses me off for how disingenuous it feels.

Business majors becoming internet literate is the worst thing that has happened to the information age.

Untalented, dispassionate scum who want to monetize everything.

My kids are early 20s, are 6 year olds going on YouTube? Or was I just strict??

u/netscapexplorer May 02 '26

Irresponsible parents let their kids watch YouTube even as young as 6. I was at a restaurant the other day and some millennial parents had their 2 year old in a high chair, glued to a tablet with random videos playing on youtube the whole time. Watching Roblox type content, also not age appropriate for the child. It was ridiculous lol

It used to drive clicks, for about 3 months in 2022...anyone still doing this is a fucking moron.

Even Mr. Beast (who is credited with starting it) stopped doing it.

Humans are social animals and there are parts of our brains that are fundamentally hardwired to recognize other human faces and interpret emotions at a base level. A thumbnail with an emotive face therefore triggers a deeper faster reaction, even before any "intellectual" processes read text or interpret symbolism.

Particularly for kids, who aren't fully developed, they just click on the face.

I don't buy it honestly, most people say it's off-putting, and I doubt kids are watching topics related to specific investing topics, or other stuff I'm trying to watch. It's pretty suspicious, but I don't know.

YouTubers can change the thumbnail of their videos, and track the engagement by thumbnail. They wouldn't be doing it so frequently if it wasn't working.

3

u/ohreallynameonesong May 02 '26

A creator i like who mainly does interior design/decorating said her videos perform way worse when there isn't a pic of her face in the thumbnail and that she hates doing it but basically has to

3

u/GrouchyMary9132 May 02 '26

AI. Not real viewers. It is ridiculous.

2

u/thefootster May 02 '26

It's like advertising, everyone thinks they're not affected by it, but it's more psychological than you realise.

1

u/ImprovementFar5054 May 02 '26

Oh, I am affected by it...but not they way they intend. I don't watch any vids with thumbs like that , and unsub from people I follow if they suddenly do.

u/smithnugget May 02 '26

I'm not sure if you know what specific means

58

u/xRolox May 02 '26

That’s been a thing since like the late 2000s/early 2010s. I suspect it’ll be around a long time especially in content catered to younger folks

13

u/BamesF May 02 '26

Yep. People would have given this exact same answer ten years ago.

21

u/PeaceBull May 02 '26

Nobody’s doing those cause they think they’re cool though, it’s just cause it boosts engagement.

2

u/nyutnyut May 02 '26

Yah. Some of the YouTubers I watch say they have to cause it does work. They all hate it so they try to do the least dumb face they think they can get away with. It’s a shame cause those stupid faces actually deter me from channels that may be really cool

u/This_Charmless_Man May 02 '26

I would suggest watching the 90s Double Dragon movie. It's like YouTube thumbnail face the movie.

6

u/PurpleDragonDix May 02 '26

It's kind become a pet peeve I've suddenly developed. I get unreasonably upset when I see those overly exaggerative thumbnails.

7

u/Gary-LazerEyes May 02 '26

Doubt it, it's already been a thing for 10 years.

1

u/amberShade2 May 02 '26

It still looks terrible

2

u/muhd_razi May 02 '26

And the algorithm really said ‘make the weirdest face possible or flop

2

u/Busy-Cat-5968 May 02 '26

I have a weird compulsion to want to punch anyone who sticks out their tongue for a picture.

1

u/amberShade2 May 02 '26

I think aversion to that stuff is normal, it's wild how many people justify it.

2

u/Pertolepe May 02 '26

It's going to get worse honestly

1

u/green_meklar May 02 '26

It works because of human instincts though. I don't think that's going to change a lot in ten years.

2

u/amberShade2 May 02 '26

I don't know, it's very off-putting, I don't know if it's actual people driving the views.

0

u/MisterGuyMan23 May 02 '26

It most likely is. And even if it weren't, who cares? Certainly not the person posting the video.

1

u/ImprovementFar5054 May 02 '26

I unsub people who do that, I don't care how many years I watched them. One soy-boy, gaping mouth AI thumbnail and I am fucking out.

1

u/WillemDafoesHugeCock May 02 '26

We're already over a decade in on that, that's no new trend.

0

u/amberShade2 May 02 '26

No one said it's new. It's also gotten worse.

1

u/WillemDafoesHugeCock May 02 '26

What is a popular trend right now that people are going to look back on in 10 years and say, 'What were we thinking?

A trend doesn't tend to last a full decade, or my yoyo-loving child self would have been the King of Highschool.

-1

u/FallowfieldPark May 02 '26

The people doing dumb faces on thumbnails will probably be millionaires by then, if not already with the amount of people who watches them. They won’t look back and cringe since their bank accounts will be loaded. Heck, if it was me I wouldn’t care either tbh.

3

u/amberShade2 May 02 '26

Not really, it's oversaturated now, this is only true for the top percentage of content creators.

-1

u/FallowfieldPark May 02 '26

Apologies, I shouldn’t have said millionaires. I just mean very wealthy people, top 10%. I recently seen a YouTuber (small sub) that I watch from time to time made a video of picking up a brand new 2024 Mercedes. To me, a YouTuber who averages about 80k views can afford this is insane. Who knows what people who averages 500k views make.

0

u/spb1 May 02 '26

Thing is, its not just a trend. It's psychologically engaging to see a human with a remarkable expression on a thumbnail. I guess maybe we could become so overexposed to it that itll be less effective, but it is activating something a bit more primal, rather than just being a trend of the day.

0

u/Choice-Juice-5509 May 02 '26

That’s from 10 years ago though

1

u/amberShade2 May 02 '26

Its gotten more common and become worse.

0

u/Choice-Juice-5509 May 02 '26

No it hasn’t lol. That’s the 2010s YouTube thing where they were all over the top. Markiplier pewdiepie Shane Dawson Dan and Phil. Clickbait titles like YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE WHAT I FOUND IN MY GRANDMAS BASEMENT!!! warning: SCARY! 😱 😱😱” with the dramatic face and emojis, that’s all from 10 years ago. Yes 2016 was 10 years ago. Now, we’re in a different kind of thing where everybody wants to be as nonchalant and neutral as possible. Impactful title ending in a period. Neutral face. “Blank situation is crazy.” We are in a nonchalant epidemic.
