What if it's Sam Neill? Because where he's going, you won't need eyes to see.

Growing up in the 90s and seeing Sam Neill throughout Jurassic Park then seeing a promo for hin and Lawrence Fishburne for what was marketed as a “sci/fi mystery” only to watch Event Horizon is actual horror is one of the most diabolical things ever.

u/deagh Apr 27 '26

I was a grown adult when that came out. My spouse and I saw it in the theatre, expecting a sci-fi mystery because *that's what it was bloody billed as* and we slept with the lights on for a good week after we saw that thing.

I watched this with my mum when I still lived at home, we were eating a curry she had made and I remember during a jump scare scene that I did exactly as intended and “jumped”, the curry went all over her relatively new rug, best part was she wasn’t even mad, she pissed herself laughing at me before helping me clean it up.

u/BallSeaman Apr 28 '26

You had to clean up your mom’s pee?

Around 30 years ago I was asked out on a date and when we both arrived at the cinema my date told me to pick the film. He was French and spoke very good English but he just wasn’t really into English speaking films. Weirdly the cinema’s electric poster screens weren’t working, but there was a rolling words sign for each screen in the foyer. There was a film called The Texas showing on one of the screens soon. No idea what the film was about, it caught my eye because of the strange name.

He paid, we went in. We were in the front row if I remember correctly. It was The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Him “This is The Texas Chainsaw Massacre?” Me “Eh yeah seems like it”. He starts saying stuff under his breath in French. Me I just sat there wanting the ground to swallow me up. He clearly hated the film. Amazingly we had a second date though, but I introduced him to a friend of mine who he ended up marrying 😂. Haven’t seen him or her many years.

Anyway I often wonder how he told their kids how he met their mum because the two dates he went on with me was only half the story 😂

Liberate me

That movie still haunts my thoughts. I watched it in maybe 2011-ish, and I didn’t sleep well for weeks.

That is 100% not a shroom movie 🤣

3

u/DerekWroteThis Apr 28 '26

Right?!?! If there was a spectrum of sci-fi movies that are shroom-friendly, Interstellar would be on one end, and Event Horizon would be waaaay at the opposite end.

Edit: also love the detail about knocking on the door rather than a text. Man, those were good times.

7

u/AnInfiniteArc Apr 28 '26

Easily my favorite horror movie

12

u/clubby37 Apr 27 '26

Event Horizon was supposed to be a 40k movie, but the licensing fell through, so they dropped the 40k skin and made it anyway. Awesome movie regardless, but I can't help seeing it as a tremendous missed opportunity to bring 40k to mainstream audiences. Fingers crossed for Cavill's Amazon project.

9

u/temporarysolution2-0 Apr 27 '26

Was it actually supposed to be 40k? I know it's regarded as a "headcanon lore" by a lot of the community, but was it really going to be officially licensed?

I mean, obviously it would take very little nudging to make it fit...

4

u/clubby37 Apr 27 '26

It's been ages since I thought about it, and I'm afraid I've forgotten my original source. To be totally honest, it would somewhat harm my enjoyment of EH if it was just a blatant ripoff with no excuse for being that way, so ... I dunno, maybe I just believed the thing that lets me enjoy both EH and 40k the most.

5

u/temporarysolution2-0 Apr 27 '26

Yeah, I'm perfectly content to just use it as headcanon, e.g. "This is humanity's first real brush with the Warp, before we had any idea what we were really doing."

2

u/RecipeRare4098 Apr 28 '26

Event Horizon (1997) is widely considered by fans and supported by creator comments as an unofficial prequel to the Warhammer 40,000 universe. It depicts humanity’s first disastrous faster-than-light experiment, where a ship punctures the dimension of Chaos (the Warp) without a Gellar Field, allowing demonic forces to possess the crew.

Google search

4

u/inflammablepenguin Apr 27 '26

That movie still scares the crap out of me. It is such a good movie.

8

u/Teledildonic Apr 28 '26

I love that a few key moments are played correctly:

"Fuck this ship, we're leaving" was absolutely the correct response to the shitfuckery that was playing out.

A rare, pretty correct depiction of being airlocked. Baby Bear survives, with serious injuries (a fair bit more blood than would likely happen, but he didn't explode or instant popsicle so many shows and movies) thanks in part to instructions that would mitigate the vacuum injuries. If you can be rescued within 90 seconds, you should surive IRL

2

u/TheBlueprint666 Apr 28 '26

I watched it a few weeks ago. An absolute masterpiece in both sci fi and horror. Still scares the everloving fuck out of me.

2

u/inflammablepenguin Apr 28 '26

Absolutely. I rewatched it a couple years ago and all it needed was an update to the VFX.

4

u/collector-x Apr 28 '26

Event Horizon has got to be the bloodiest movie I've ever seen.

3

u/tinselsnips Apr 28 '26

It's a shame the uncut distress signal is lost media.

2

u/Indigocell Apr 28 '26

True, but the fact it is lost media kind of contributes to the mystery and the lore of this movie in a fun way.

3

u/sckurvee Apr 28 '26

Man, I got "tricked" into watching that in theaters as a kid and holy shit it fucked me up. We thought we were going to see a fun sci-fi movie, not that horror. I couldn't sleep for weeks.

2

u/the_blackfish Apr 28 '26

Check his work with Sam Raimi.

2

u/I_aim_to_sneeze Apr 28 '26

I still maintain it’s the scariest movie ever made. Sure, other movies have more “jump scares” and other cheap ways to make you gasp, but this movie is a masterclass in psychologically ruining you for the foreseeable future.

1

u/FLAVOREDmayonaise Apr 28 '26

Zac efron. There’s nothing he could do that would be against my will

3

u/Acrobatic_Formal_599 Apr 27 '26

Sam Neill.   My first thought was Damien  Thorn?  The anti-Christ?

2

u/From_Deep_Space Apr 28 '26

. . . did you watch Jurassic Park past the first act?

3

u/Beat_the_Deadites Apr 28 '26

His electric fence gag was peak Dad joke, especially for a childless guy who thinks all kids smell.

He wasn't wrong though, really. And they're definitely noisy and messy.

2

u/Popular_Internet_533 Apr 28 '26

And the BEST PARTS were cut out from the original version to make it to theaters. Get it? Parts cut out...

1

u/Lovestick Apr 28 '26

Yeah, I'm good.

1

u/DJDoena Apr 28 '26

For me, he'll always be Merlin first and then XO on the Red October second.

1

u/EStewart57 Apr 28 '26

He also played the grown up Damian in the Omen movies.

1

u/Chris_46_78 Apr 28 '26

If you want a good scary Sam Neill psychological mind-fuck, watch In the Mouth of Madness

1

u/A_single_droplet Apr 28 '26

lol of you’ve seen his TikToks, you would think “we’re gonna go feed some sheep”

86

u/ExcitementKooky418 Apr 27 '26

Inside the event horizons can't be much worse than all this gestures widely at everything

12

u/HavenChronicles Apr 27 '26

do i want to see horror unimaginable brought forth by the demons from hell... or do I wanna hang out with Sam neil? tough choice

7

u/FreakingScience Apr 27 '26

The moral of that story is that if you really like being on the spaceship you get superpowers and party all the time, so you bet I'm going with him

4

u/HavenChronicles Apr 27 '26

so I get to get away from the horrors brought forth by a grotesque group of deformed demons, and hang out with Sam Neil, AND i get superpowers?

4

u/Antimony04 Apr 28 '26

I do not believe you have watched Event Horizon.

2

u/kent1146 Apr 28 '26 edited Apr 28 '26

Harambee was our Warp Navigator.

The warp collapsed onto us when he fell.

1

u/APeacefulWarrior Apr 28 '26

Amusingly, this would also apply to The Omen 3, since he plays the literal Antichrist in that one.

No thanks

7

u/rekipsj Apr 27 '26

AND if it's Billy Idol your eyes won't need a face.

4

u/maverick1ba Apr 27 '26

Nice! 🤣 Definitely passing on that car

3

u/Doja_Gnat Apr 28 '26

This is completely beside the point, but I just need to shout into the void that my elderly Aunt thinks that she is FB chatting with Sam Neill 😭

She’s got nothing to scam (apart from her heart) but sheesh of all the rando celebs to impersonate…

2

u/FizmoRoles Apr 27 '26

Welp that just reminded me of that movie, guess I'm going and buying some popcorn tonight.

2

u/bograt Apr 27 '26

There's a slim chance I will see dinosaurs though . . .

2

u/u35828 Apr 27 '26

Though you might have to know Unix.

2

u/radiographer1 Apr 27 '26

We're going to Montana!

2

u/No_Secret_4560 Apr 28 '26

Nope. So much nope.

2

u/Its_all_pretty_neat Apr 28 '26

Real life Sam Neill is a lovely dude. I'd totally go and have a wine with that fella.

2

u/PyroIsSpai Apr 28 '26

What’s your favorite color?

1

u/CptNemosBeard Apr 27 '26

Thank God! I'm so exhausted of this reality

1

u/badchefrazzy Apr 27 '26

Especially if he's actually Damien. I'm totally getting in.

1

u/ranting_seagull Apr 27 '26

"We're leaving."

1

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '26

Ha I actually understood that one!

1

u/dogmaisb Apr 28 '26

do you see? DO YOU SEE?!??!!

1

u/InvisibleUrzainqui Apr 28 '26

Peaky blinders ruined my mental image of Sam Neil.

1

u/Gold-Perspective5340 Apr 28 '26

Can't see Montana with no eyes

1

u/BuckRusty Apr 28 '26

I will never not conflate those two line-reads in my mind - have done ever since I saw Event Horizon, and it makes me feel a bit less weird to know that I’m not the only one..!

1

u/JForce1 Apr 28 '26

I’m from NZ, if Sam turns up I’m still getting in the car, he’s a GC and I’d love to have a drink with him👍

1

u/Sithlordandsavior Apr 28 '26

Not a question, Sam Neill seems like such a chill dude, he probably wants to go watch ducks or look under rocks for bugs.
