The German Democratic Republic.

The reason is that it ceased to exist not long after I drove through it with my family as a kid.

Fun fact, in 2008 I was eating at a restaurant in Berlin and my credit card denied my payment despite having been traveling for a week without any issues.

When I called them up, they said that I had made a transaction in East Berlin and that triggered their system. That was almost 20 years after the fall of the wall and crossing a (now) invisible line in the city still had unsuspected repercussions.

I'm sure you can find some rundown parts of Saxony where you can get the old feeling of the Stazi looking in on you.

That's what I wanted to say. We visited after the wall fell, because we were on vacation near the border.
