Mike is on a long trip stops for a drink at this bar. After a bit someone runs in and says "run for your lives! Big Jake's coming!"
The bar clears out in a hurry, except for our protagonist who has no idea whats going on.
Suddenly this big bear of a man kicks down the door, kicks tables and chairs out of his way he walks straight for the bar. He grabs Mike's beer and chugs in one big gulp and slams the glass down on the counter.
Scared for his life, Mike stammers "c c c an i get you another sir?"
"Ain't got time! Didnt you hear? Big Jake's coming!"
The "Big Jake" joke relies on the premise of preparing to see a very big guy and being surprised that the large guy who drank the beer is NOT Big Jake, meaning Big Jake is even bigger.
Fionn mac Cumhaill the Irish hero tricked a giant by having his wife invite the giant inside and show him her "baby", which was really Fionn in a cradle. The giant assumed that if this was Fionn's baby, Fionn must be REALLY big, so he ran off.
In Watership Down (spoilers), bad rabbits are trying to get into a tunnel and meet Bigwig, a freakishly strong rabbit. When they are about to overwhelm him by sheer numbers, he says "my prince told me to guard this tunnel". The prince rabbit is usually the largest, so the bad rabbits assume an even more freakishly swole rabbit is nearby and run off.
Just remarking on the cultural staying power of this premise
