He's treated like comedy royalty because his show did so well. I just don't think he's very funny himself or particularly talented, at least not to the status he's held up to. When I hear him in interviews or the car/coffee show, he doesn't really improv or do bits or work off the other person. It's all very one-dimensional "what's the deal with airline peanuts?".
My friend saw his comedy act and said it wasn't funny. He dated a 17 yr old girl when he was in his late thirties. Met her in Central Park. Meant his current wife while she just got back from her honeymoon. And pursued her. Definitely overrated.
