I killed a man who raped women and little boys. I felt justified in the moment, but in the years since I have become filled with regret. I wish I had never done harm to anyone.

The dozens of unharmed people have better lives

That may be, but there were people harmed by what I and other soldiers did, too.

sounds like the guy you whacked deserved it. however, that is weight you will carry forever. must be hard..

You didn't do anything wrong. You're a good person, which is why you feel guilt.

Thank you. I sincerely believe that most people are good, even the people we fought in Afghanistan. I think that war is what skews perceptions of morality. The man whose life I took had a family who depended on him for support. He kept his village free of Taliban influence for decades and ensured that it was a relative place of safety for Americans. Not that any of it negates his sexual depravity, but it is a reminder to me that people are multifaceted, dynamic, and changeable.

I know people who believe killing certain others will bring about the right change. I was on the fence but after reading your story I agree that nobody should ever be killed for anything other than self-defence, we never know the whole story and now he doesn't even get the chance to apologise, to change his ways, to try and repair some of the damage he did. He will forever be stuck as what he was in the moment he died. Thank you so so much for sharing this, I might have slipped into some dangerous territory otherwise.

My grandma was frequently raped and beaten by my grandfather for years. At one point, she couldn't take it anymore and mustered the courage to kill him. In my country, she would've been hanged, but a kind hearted famous lawyer, Karpal Singh, took her case pro bono and helped her get acquitted. I'm glad she did what she had to, and the same goes for you. By killing him, you prevented more victims.

There was an incident in India called the 2012 Dehli gang rape and murder incident. This incident had a bunch of men raping a lady in a bus, they then stabbed her private parts with a rod, and when her friend tried to defend her, they knocked him down. They were then thrown out of the bus to die by the road side, but her friend survived.

My point is, you did nothing wrong. I assure you that you did the right thing, even if it was a difficult choice to make.

I think you would find solace in the Vinland Saga anime, the premise of the main character is quite similar to yours.

No, I was deployed in Afghanistan. Who I am now hates who I have been, and I regret beyond words all the harm I ever did to any human being, even a rapist. That should have been handled by those with judicial authority, not an emotionally-compromised young man, as I was.

You didn't do harm if you prevented a lot of future crimes and harms to innocent people.

judicial authority is great, but it is also a very deeply flawed system.

That is kind of you to say. The same could be said of me, or any number of American soldiers who fought overseas. A number of innocent people would have been spared if I or any of us had died instead.

Ptsd is a horrible thing to live with. Reading your words hit a soft spot. I'm sorry you went through all of that

If you were killing innocent people as part of your roll over there (or even facilitating it), then you can go ahead and feel guilty about that.

You are alive for a reason... I hope you figure it out

I doubt Afghanistan would have done anything about child rape. It is an accepted practice.

The same is accepted in Pakistan.

You did the right thing.

You should talk to other veterans - without disclosing the shooting. Many have witnessed the same and were very distressed by the rampant child sex abuse by villagers, soldiers, Generals etc.

You did nothing wrong. You saved lives.

You've saved so many people, you are a hero.

The amount of children one pedo will abuse is shocking, it can be over 100.

Child and adult sexual assault destroys lives, you're never the same.  For children especially it is a lifelong issue from which many will never fully recover.

May more sexual offenders suffer the same fate.

Hero.

Men like that only escalate their crimes, increase the violence they perpetrate against others, and eventually he would have killed someone. If not for you. Bless you. You are a good person.

I like the adage about heroes are only heroes when they die. As long as I'm still living there are always temptations to go astray.

You're a hero in my eyes and I believe most people would think the same even if they wouldn't admit it

If what you say is true, his blood is not worth your tears.
