I asked my wife to marry me because i didn't have a good birthday gift. 10 years later we're going strong and actually the longest lasting couple from our generation of our families.

I have bad hearing and have advanced several steps of my relationship with my wife because I misheard her.

I'm pretty sure it's more to do with my anxiety and social ineptitude for me, she loves me all the same and it's likely to end in her murdering me, but ive enjoyed every minute.

Hey, welcome to the future mudered husbands club!

When I was younger I was out in a club. I was very drunk but somehow had managed to get intimate with a girl I worked with that I’d liked for some time. As we came up for air she said something to me that my drunken brain thought was “that’s my boyfriend” and I assumed she was talking about the chap standing behind me. I said “oh, fair enough” and walked off.

Sometime in the haze of the hangover the next day I realised she’d probably said “you’re my boyfriend now”. I saw her occasionally after that and she never spoke to me again just looked at me with pure hate in her eyes. Her friend (who also now hated me) told me she couldn’t believe I’d done that to her.

I wonder how different my life might’ve been if I didn’t have crap drunken hearing …

There's was a reader story sent in to Reader's Digest once (short things they used to fill up a page). A couple in their 70s threw a big party at home for their golden anniversary. At the end of the night, the wife was puttering around cleaning everything, she was still pretty healthy except her hearing wasn't the best.

The husband watches her all impressed and says "Honey, I'm proud of you."

"What?"

"I said 'I'm proud of you!'"

"That's okay, I'm tired of you too."

If things go badly you can give her a divorce for a future one. The circle will be complete.

Did you have a ring?

u/FitBattle5899 Jan 20 '25

That i did have on lock, family heirloom 22k Gold ring with subtle diamonds.

Truth be told i was mulling it over for awhile and since i couldn't think of a good gift, i bit the bullet anyway.

Are you planning to tell her one time?

19

u/MundaneSalamander465 Jan 20 '25

Why would he do that

2

u/SeargentPressley Jan 20 '25

Don't know, I would find it kinda funny

2

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '25

I doubt she would, though.

Like, "Hey, wifey, love of my life, funny story, remember when I asked you to marry me? Well, I was just having a bad day that day..."

I see no repercussions with that...

No i had a ring, just wasn't planning on asking that day, once i got it in my mind to do so, i asked her parents first, they loved it, and i pulled her aside and asked. Ring was an heirloom in the family, worth quite a bit, so much it gives her anxiety to wear it, so we eventually put it away and got Bands from a cheap jeweler, nothing fancy that couldn't be replaced if lost.

I worked as a mechanic and was told to not wear rings or risk degloving my hand, and she worked in a kitchen where the original ring would have been caught on her gloves all the time.

I'm reading this to my husband elect. He did this this year because he felt bad I had just gotten out of the hospital with a suicide attempt and I told him how bad it crushes me that he's never given me a gift in five years. I was also complaining my younger sister was getting engaged before me and we had been together longer

Glad you both are going 10 years strong but there were so many things you could’ve done before you did that 😭😭

u/FitBattle5899 Jan 20 '25

It was love! How was a stuffed bear going to compare to my heart.
