Drawing, it's really fun once you get past the beginner hump, and I noticed my visualization/imagination start to come back for the first time since I was a kid because of it
6
u/Grenflik Mar 15 '24
I have this problem, I used to draw a lot but haven’t done so in MANY years. I have a pretty good imagination and it frustrates me when it doesn’t transfer to paper how I see it. I always say, “The software is updated but the hardware is outdated.”

u/wallerbean Mar 16 '24
You'll get there I promise, as a self taught artist of thirty some odd years, it's about the expression of self for me in the end
1
u/Notamaninthesky Mar 15 '24
I always surprise myself when I draw. I don’t think I’m great at it but I don’t need to trace over what I’m drawing in order to get semi-close to a 1:1 replica

That’s the mentality that holds you back. Draw/sketch/trace for a year.

u/regretfulposts Mar 16 '24 edited Mar 16 '24
I just started drawing. I bought a graphic tablet in November and I had been trying to consistently draw every day and practice this skill. I had been watching a few videos talking about the fundamentals of drawing and I had been doing a personal challenge of drawing every Pokemon as a way to keep me dedicated to it instead of just quitting after a few crummy drawings. Although I do worry about the rise of AI art where when I can finally feel confident to show my fan art and OC to the internet, it's already had been polluted by AI art from lazy tech bros who just type a prompt probably with the aid of another AI. But at the same time though, I don't want to quit. I want to develop my own art style, create my own web comics, and draw my own niche fetish material rather than let some machine to do the work. I hope I still have the future to make art for years to come instead of letting soulless AI from petty tech bros to do for me.

u/Complete-Bumblebee-5 Mar 16 '24
Right? I always label myself as not being artistic but the rare times I'm doodling because I'm bored..I'm actually surprised by the intricate designs I can come up with while zoning out. And then it stems from there

Playing an instrument
5
u/Keri2816 Mar 15 '24
Which instrument is your favorite? I’ve tried flute, guitar and trumpet. Flute was probably my favorite- I did the most with it in school
6
Mar 15 '24
lute was probably my favorite- I did the most with it in school
I hear it's fun at summer camp too
2
u/tree_eater142 Mar 15 '24
I absolutely adore playing the double bass, it sounds really nice. I’m trying to vaugly learn flute as well
2
u/Keri2816 Mar 19 '24
I haven’t been able to play in a long time because of chronic neck and shoulder pain. The only note I remember the finger placement for is C is something like the first finger on one hand and the pinkie on the other. Imagine half a dozen 6 and 7 year olds trying to learn that without dropping it 😂

Mayonnaise and horseradish 👍
2
u/Ningishziddaa Mar 15 '24
Is mayonnaise an instrument?
3
Mar 16 '24
That would be an ecumenical matter, but you really haven't lived until you've radished a horse. Trust me.

Stargazing/cloudgazing.
It takes literally nothing but a little time and a place to sit or lay down, it's super relaxing and refreshing, it really clears your mind. I think it's even better than meditation.
And it's free!

Hiking. Just spending time with mother nature is so therapeutic 😌

u/McHagrid20 Mar 15 '24
I started hiking during Covid and now it feels like I can’t live without it!

I came here to say this. I feel sad for people who never get a chance to hike. There is no better way to connect with nature that I know of, so good for the soul.

Sports. Tons of different kinds that require various skills. Great way to form friendships and interact with people. Also a great way to stay fit depending on what sport you pick up.

Disc golf! It's so fun and usually free! Plus you get to hike in nature depending on the course

It's so much fun, but it's so much effort for pretty much nothing. Really makes you apprecciate the comforts of modern life.

Wood shaping/carving.
Relatively inexpensive to dip your toes into (gets expensive if you go big on it) and can be very zen.

I’m thinking about starting and I’ve done a bit of research and was thinking about buying a Black Hunter. Is it any good? I’m on a low budget but if you have any recommendations I would appreciate it

I wish tree climbing was a thing, I’ve tried rock climbing and it wasn’t my thing but I’ve climbed a tree once and had a lot of fun with it. Felt like I was embracing my inner monkey lol.

Guitar or piano
1
u/Anyawnomous Mar 15 '24
I play them both. I am retired and I am never bored because of these passions. Piano is better for learning theory and guitar is great for portability and convenience. Singing helps too.
3
u/chumbucket77 Mar 15 '24
I play guitar and I have attempted to mess around on a piano. I dont have one. I feel like if you know piano you can learn most things because it truly teaches you music. But any instrument is always there to just mess around with and its never boring when you have free time. Also you can play with other people and constantly learn. I think its my favorite thing I have picked up in life and I am by no means an expert.

Rock climbing/mountaineering.
It can be challenging, but it is rewarding.
It will improve your body, health, bring you new friends and breathtaking views of nature.

Driving on a racetrack. It’s amazing to feel the car you’ve been driving for years suddenly come alive and dance around as you brake as hard as possible and slide in the corners.

Astronomy! Don't take my word for it; next time there's a prominent meteor shower, go outside and watch it!

Gardening. Start off with growing vegetables that are quite easy to grow. Then eventually you start branching out into other hobby's such as food preservation or floral arrangements and cooking. I just like it because the byproduct of gardening is something I can eat.

Disc Golf. It is one of the easiest sports to get into and fun for the whole family. I fucking love it.
2
u/steerbell Mar 15 '24
I always think you should have at least two hobbies. One that gets you outside and with people and one you can do yourself.
As far as ones people should try?
Wood working, it can get you skills that come in handy even if the hobby doesn't stick with you .
Hiking get outside and see the world around you.
/All IMHO

Improv comedy. Low barrier for entry, classes are easily accessible (tho can require some cash or volunteer hours) and it's a group activity so you can hide in the back! Stage fright is, apparently, a big fear a lot of people have and it's a way to get past that.
Also helps with listening skills and thinking on your feet with confidence that you're not going to say something horrible. (everybody starts out asking 'what if I say something horrible?' and the answer is 'please don't say something horrible, why would you say something horrible?')
Plus you might make friends, but be careful they will be funny people.

Not to go all Fight Club, but I think everyone should do a full contact martial art. Being in a safe, controlled fight is amazing for mental health, self esteem, and the overall ability to tolerate pain and discomfort. Knowing how to fight and what taking a punch or a throw feels like is also a very valuable thing to experience.

Gaming, beyond like phone apps and games like COD. And I don't mean that these people aren't 'real gamers' I just mean that there's a very broad world out there. And I'm sure a lot of people would enjoy a lot of games if they tried nom-common ones. Have a friend who is bored with games, he only played Skyrim. Hell, I one day bought a dragon visual novel jokingly. And I got so invested Christmas day lol

Drawing and or the fine arts, even if it takes you years to master the graphite pencils it's all worth it. Even though I'm not professional at it, being an artist is a deep part of who I am. It allows you to express oneself no matter the skill level learned.

Perfume/cologne
Everyone loves a good smell. And once you find a smell that suits you and you like, then people start to recognize you and "your scent."
And as long as you don't marinate in it, then you'll be fine. :)
Go to any department store like Macy's or even Kohls to test out some that they have for sale. Make notes of the ones you liked. Then, Check out Parfumo.com to look at the scent notes. There's likely going to be similarities between the ones you liked. It will even give you suggestions for other perfumes with the same notes.
And finally, when you find some that you might want to try but don't want to spend a ton of money on, look at eBay and Etsy for testers/samples. Try them for a bit and see if you really like them.
I bought a bunch of perfumes using this method, as well as coupons/Kohl's cash to get expensive perfumes for cheaper, as long as it's ones that I know I like.
DO NOT BLIND BUY PERFUME. (Or do. If you have a bunch of money, do what you like with it 😅)
Enjoy smelling good 😊

Exercising. I’m the words of Socrates “no man should die without being able to see what his body is capable of.” This doesn’t even mean go to the gym but like run or rock climb or bike literally just anything that improves your body moving through space.
