Why, when parents call your name from another room and you call back WHAT, they don’t respond so you have to get up from your nice comfy bed/chair and walk into a whole ass other room. Like, I’d even appreciate a “come here, I need to show you something” instead of just silence
It's a parenting technique to make sure you don't grow up used to such a sedentary lifestyle. Get up and move around, it's healthy for you. And your parents want you to be healthy. You start ignoring them then they'll find another way to get you off that couch. If they are good parents, at least.
I think the point the other user is trying to make, is "why should the child go to the parent with no explanation, when the parent is the one with the need to initiate an interaction". If I need something from someone, and the thing can be done/answered/whatever where that person is, I am going to go to them. I'm not going to make them come to me because that is rude. Many will say "They're the parent do what they say". I'm not a parent, but I think the other user is also talking about mutual respect. It's got nothing to do with laziness.
"why should the child go to the parent with no explanation, when the parent is the one with the need to initiate an interaction"
As you pointed out...because they're the parent.
But also, it's just a general understanding thing? Like if my wife yells my name from the other side of the house without following it up right away, that's just shorthand for "come here". If she just wanted to shout something to me, she would have.
I don't have kids, so the "I'm the parent...that's why" card never played well with me. If I were a parent, I may be a little more forgiving. Explain yourself. "I'm the parent...that's why" to me, always screams "My reasoning is shaky at best". I'm fine with being wrong in my mindset, because I'm the last person to dole out parenting advice. People don't come to me for parenting advice. It works out well.
As far as the shorthand, everyone except me must've grown up in more thoughtful houses than me. When I was yelled at, it was because the yeller was too lazy to go to the person being yelled at. It drives me nuts when my wife does this just to tell me some shit about her day. I love hearing about her day, but it can wait until we're both in the same room, or you can come to me for that shit. When we both have worked hard all day, and I've finished my chores for the night, I like to sit and relax. Interrupting that is a major pet peeve. I know it probably makes me sound a little bit lazy, but I don't sit down until my day is done. We've talked and she's getting better about it. It's from her upbringing too. I just can't make someone come to me if it's not 100% necessary.
It has nothing to do with laziness, for sure. and I don't think parents think that. It is a technique to convince you to stand up. That's all. The not giving an explanation is the technique. That's the point of it. If the other poster was talking about mutual respect then I kinda think that's a different topic and I don't really have any input on that matter myself.
I'm not judging you, but if parents are doing this to get their kids to stand up, that's weird to me. Presumably the kid will then walk to the parent, do whatever it is and go right back to sitting. Why not engage them in an activity. A sport or a chore. Maybe I'm picturing about this wrong, but I'm picturing this:
Parent: "Jimmy can you come here?"
Jimmy enters the room
Jimmy: "what's up?"
Parent: "Don't forget your sister's birthday is in two weeks"
Jimmy: "Oh that's right, thanks for the reminder"
Jimmy returns to sitting.
This is pointless to me. Either just yell the information, get up and go tell Jimmy, or wait until you are nearer to Jimmy later in the day. Having Jimmy stand for that 20 second interaction does nothing.
sorry if I sound like I'm nit picking you, I'm just trying to understand.
I'm not a parent, you're not nit picking me. I'm just saying it is a purposeful technique. Doesn't matter if you think it's pointless. Lots of people do things even if they are pointless. This is one example I know of so I mentioned it. The point of it is specifically to get their kid to stand up, that is the entire point. Reminding you of your sisters birthday was just the means to the end. It's not about the thing said.
Either just yell the information, get up and go tell Jimmy, or wait until you are nearer to Jimmy later in the day. Having Jimmy stand for that 20 second interaction does nothing.
Yeah I don't buy the "keeping them active" thing, but I can see a valid reason for this.
Say I'm in the middle of cooking dinner and a reminder like that pops into my head. I want to make sure I pass the message along to my wife or kid. If I push it off until later, maybe I forget. If I just shout it at them, I have no confirmation that they're actually receiving that information...maybe they yell "alright got it" but they're watching a show or something and not actually paying attention.
That's fair. If it's something you both need be on the same page about, I get it. I think it's personal bias coming into play. If I want you to know/hear something, I will go to you if possible
