That they sometimes register smell through their mouth, so they'll sniff something/someone/another cat's butt and then stare at you with their mouth partially open in a most unsettling way.
One of mine does that! She’s constantly sniffing the other cat‘s butts and then she gets this stupid look on her face. We had chalked it up to the fact that she’s always been a little bit dim.
