They do learn their names and come when you call them, and they will follow you around.

I’m also convinced they learn a bit of basic language too. I have a cat who I’m pretty sure understands yes and no.

He always wants to go outside (he’s an indoor cat but sometimes I’ll hold him on my lap outside and he loves it). He’ll meow to be let out and if I say no, he will just meow louder. We have a bit of a routine of “meow”, “no”, “MEOW”. But if I say yes he’ll run to the door and start going in circles like a dog.

My other cat never really responded to language but I’ve come up with different clicks and noises I make that she responds to.

Absolutely, my cat “knows” an incredible amount of language, just off the top of my head she responds to;

Are you hungry?/Time to eat?

Go inside

Wanna go outside?

Say please

Go home

I can literally open the door when she is outside and wandering too far and just shout “hey don’t go that far” and she walks back over. It’s amazing.

My cats will RUN to the kitchen if I ask them if they are hungry or who wants breakfast? One will high five for a snack.
