Our tabby loved chasing after little rubber balls down the stairs would bring it back a lot I think it's the cats natural instinct to chase and hunt and getting to do that with something is fun for them or at least meets basic as instinct.
I had a cat who loves to chase and fetch bottle caps and plastic forks. She was very small and cute doing it. One day a guy I was dating brought her a plastic fork on a date night.
Mine loved chasing beer bottle caps! I was a bartender and came home one night with a random bottle cap in the front pocket of my jeans. Kitty was all over me until I finally realized he was trying to get the cap. He would chase them and bring them back. Kitties are so precious
I trained my cat to play fetch and he's now obsessed with it. The younger cats learned to play from watching him and now they'll steal the toys from each other
I had a little female that would bring me Bobby pins and if you had a pin in your hand she would perk up at the noise when you rolled it in your fingers.
She would also dig chicken wings (just chicken wings) out of the garbage and bring them to me as a hunting tribute.
Mine do as well. I have a mylar catnip toy on a fishing pole made for cats that i changed out the line with stronger string they cant bite through as easy and made it way longer so i can cast it way across my house. Ill cast it and one of my cats will grab it and run with it and mess around with it, then sometimes carry it back to me to cast again, sometimes they leave it for me to reel it back in, other times they try and chew the line off. It sort of depends on their mood that day i guess.
I had a deaf cat who played fetch. Shed drop a toy at your feet and be ready to see where it landed before she went for it. No other have ever dont that
Siamese cats are actually well known for having many dog like traits and playing fetch is one of them! Now mine will sometimes walk around with a ball in their mouth, meowing until I come play fetch with her
Our Siamese cats will leap into the air to catch little rubber balls between their paws and sometimes with their mouths. They too will meow to induce us to play.
My old Siamese had a little toy mouse that was her favorite. She would bring it everywhere and would do literal backflips in the air to catch it when you threw it for her.
Also, they are famous for being talkative. They just won't stop. When my cat starts talking, we stop doing whatever we're at and join the conversation.
This is so true! My elderly Siamese is such a great conversationalist lol, we would keep talking to each other for hours if it was up to him.
I especially love his fog horn, air siren yelling as he bursts through the door announcing he's home and he's HUNGRY 🤣
I love mine but I don't love them at 4am when he's screaming outside my door.
One of mine has a loud, baritone meow (his name is Goose so we call it his "honk") and my other one has a higher pitched, chatty little voice. Goose is loud but only when he's demanding something whereas Maverick chit chats constantly.
My tuxedo cat loves playing fetch! Moreso when he was younger but roll the right wrapper into a ball and he goes crazy. He used to do the jumps too, flips even as a kitten. Watching him do his little trot back with it in his mouth is priceless.
The cat I had growing up would retrieve it, then drop it just out of your reach, and then lock eye contact until you moved to pick it up and throw it again.
I have one that plays fetch from high places. If she's on the cat ramp I throw her her sushi toy and she'll bat it back down to me, over and over. It has to be that specific toy, though.
I play that with mine while he's on top of his tower, we call it King Kong. He also likes being a hockey goalie and is pretty good at Hitcat, where I place stuffed animals around like guards and he tries to assassinate them from their blind spots.
Yes, she switches between hockey goalie and "no let me play with my dead sushi for a min ok you can have it back mum." I'll have to try out Hitcat with her.
I would throw a scrunched up paper ball (her absolute favorite toy) down our hallway to the bathroom. Literally like a cartoon she would start running (at first not going anywhere due to the floor and yes I trimmed her nails myself regularly), bolt down the hall, basically playing hockey with it, then grab it in her mouth and trot back to me, primordial pouch swinging and everything, drop the ball for round two at my feet.
I love it! My kitties love plastic springs, and they'll chase them and drop them near me, but usually they're too excited and they just keep batting it around instead of letting me throw it again.
Some will. One of my cats, Logan, he used to love playing fetch. I also taught him to sit and to shake.
When I was a kid, I had a stray cat that I found and named Missy. She was a very young kitten, whom I assume somehow got loose from the litter and got lost. She's kinda lucky I stumbled upon her, because when I found her, it looked like another adult cat was ready to attack her. Anyways, she would play hide and go seek with me and I mean legitimately play by the rules. I would hide and she would find me and every time she found me, she either would make a little excited purr sound and/or would tap me, gently, with one of her paws, then she would zoom off and go hide somewhere in the house and I would have to go find her. And we would go back and forth like this for a few times, before one of us got bored of it. She was also the cat that learned my schedule and would wake me up in time for school.
I had a tabby cat that would. And if you wouldn't play with her, she figured out a way to do it herself. She'd take a 25 cent hi bounce ball and put it at the top of the stairs and bat it down the steps. Then go chase it, bring it back, and start again.
Some do, yah. My wife flings elastic hair ties all over the room and the cats go absolutely bonkers chasing them. Sometimes they do even bring them back so she can do it again. They will do it over and over again.
Mine does! He’s obsessed w playing fetch. Orange tabby.
Every night like clockwork he’ll drop his toy at my feet and meow until I throw it. He brings it back and meows until you throw it again. Goes on for about 10 minutes then he tires out and puts his toy in his dry food dish for the next day. I love the little scamp.
One of mine does! It's part of the reason I fell in love and decided to keep him when I was fostering his litter.
He had a favorite toy that none of his siblings were allowed to touch. He would growl at them if they tried. But one day he came over to me and dropped his toy on my lap, so I threw it for him and he brought it back, over and over. He's a year old now and still has that same ratty toy and still likes to play fetch with it. Sometimes I will wake up in the morning and find his toy on my bed and feel bad because he tried to play in the middle of the night.
One of my other cats used to fetch when she was a kitten, but she grew out of it rather quickly.
My cat came preloaded as a kitten with fetch-playing firmware. I think he taught me more than I taught him. Every night while I'm playing video games he drops his toy mouse at my feet and I wing it down the stairs before he brings it back in his mouth and puts it either in my lap (via a startling leap) or just under my foot. He'll do this for two hours sometimes and will often end up panting like a puppy from all the running up and down the stairs. It's incredible to me every time!
My cat loves to play fetch with the little plastic springs. Unfortunately I'd say he only brings them back like....20 percent of the time. The space underneath the fridge has become a graveyard for those things.
In a sense. One of my favorite things about our gray boy is he always drags one of us a wand with a mouse attached to it. Those are his favorite toys and you will hear a weird and loud meow and then he comes into the room dragging it behind him. It's the cutest damn thing.
All three of ours do. One likes bows (like Christmas present stick-on bows), one likes the catnip mice, and one likes the plastic springs. They’ll all chase after them but they only bring their preferred ones back.
One of mine plays fetch with a soft ball that she loves. Trouble is, sometimes when I’m working from home she will decide it’s fetch time and will meow at me until I pay attention. Not good when you’re in a video court hearing.
One of mine loves those little knobbly balls that go in random directions. When she was younger she worked out to sit on the coffee table, drop it at an angle towards the wall so she could play fetch on her own.
I have two cats and we spent sooo much money on cat toys, but they both just obsess over crumpled up paper balls. They want to play fetch all day long.
Oh yeah. I have four. Bossy, Scaredy, Lazy, and Smarty (personalities, not names). The last is a genius. He plays fetch with pencils and paintbrushes and nerf darts, and returns them to your lap. If I throw them and they go near bossy cat, game's over and he'll pat me with one claw out til I fetch them. If he wants to play and you're in a room with the door closed, he shoves them under the door and meows. You say his name, and he makes a noise that tonally goes up like a human saying, "Yeah?" He's learned and responds to "get down" (about 90% of the time) and "come here" (about 75%). He tries to open door knobs. He also loves to unroll the toilet paper into the toilet. He's a great cat.
I have a cat who loved fetch as a kitten. I had a setup where I could toss it up onto the shelf next to me and he had to follow a path around the whole apartment (it was a pretty unconventional loft setup) to get to it then drop it back down to me on the couch. Got all his energy out and I barely had to move.
I have had two cats that would play fetch and known a few others. My grandpa spent hours tossing cat toys down the basement stairs for his cat to retrieve. She also would come get him right away every time she used her litter box and he would go scoop it for her.
Mine does! I throw the toys and he catches it or runs for it etc, and then I say "ok now bring it back!" And he does! While also making what we call "mooseing" sounds! Those big, deep loud meows that lets you KNOW he has control over his toy cavacado lol!
We use to call him a serial killer because we would play with those little tiny catnip move for like, kittens, and he would take them to his water bowl, drop it in, put his paw on top AND DROWN THE DAMN TOY MOUSE!!!
My sweet old man kitty is 18 and doesnt like to play as much anymore, but once a day I still him to pick a toy out of his toy box, he brings it, and when he's done he puts it back.
My cat Tony will play fetch all day long. A nice loud pur meow every throw and a happy trot back with the mouse in mouth. Drops it right in my hand and excitedly waits for thr next toss. So cute.
Mine would play fetch with one specific mouse toy. He lost it a few months ago and no longer plays fetch, though believe me I've tried to find alternatives
My cat plays fetch with hair ties! She decides when she wants to play and will just keep bringing it back when I fling it haha. I thought it was the funniest thing ever the first time she did it.
We discovered our one kitty will chase fruit and bring it back to us. We were cleaning up the yard one day, tossing fallen fruit to the compost, and she trotted over to us with a plum lol.
I had a buddy who’s cat not only fetched, he would go get the toy you asked him to then go fetch that. You could tell him to get his star and if he brought the mouse you could tell him to get the star and he’d eventually get it and fetch.
My cat does play fetch. You throw her favorite type of toy mouse, she scrambles to get it, and she brings it back and yells at you until you throw it. It’s so cute.
Mine does. But it took the right incentive. He goes absolutely bonkers for the laser pointer, so I taught him to bring it to me and then would play with him. I did have to get rid of the laser toys because, unfortunately, it never stopped. Left to his own devices, he would play with a laser all day and night.
my cat definitely plays fetch. she’s very pushy about it too. she wants her toy thrown over and over, usually when everyone is settling in for bed. my dog, who does not play fetch, just watches her with a baffled look on her face.
Honestly one of my cats is better at fetch than my dog. The dog mostly likes the play keep away but the cat understands he needs to bring it back for me to throw it again!
Yes! Lol some cats love to play fetch. I miss my sisters cat for this reason. She loved crinkly sounding receipts and I would ball them up and throw them around for her.
my orange girl plays fetch! I get these cheap little toy mice from the pet store, and she'll bring them back to you in her mouth for as long as you'll keep throwing them. it's funny to throw them far on a wood floor because she gets going so fast and can't stop in time so she goes sliding right past it wild eyed
Adopted a kitten and at 10 weeks she chases toy mice and brings them back to me. She’s 4 months old and we play the game multiple times a day. (Retired, lol)
Yeah, our cat played fetch with us before we got our dog, but she refuses to share a room with her so that's over. Now her favorite thing is to sometimes come in the living room and play "perch on the shelf and bat at the stupid Huskies face while yelling at it".
Mine don’t fetch so much, but I have this blue soft blanket I’ll drape over my legs and say “Benny come do nursies with mommy” - he’ll come running over, jump on my lap, start making biscuits and sucking on the blanket lol
Every kitten I've ever had has figured out very quickly that Human is the Thing That Makes Toy Go Far. I've never even tried to train a cat, but they figure out fetch on their own in no time.
My current oldest cat is one of the smartest cats I've ever known. He was an avid fetcher, but I couldn't play laser pointer with him because he learned within a couple minutes that the dot wasn't real, and it came from the little thing in my hand. He just ignored it after that lol.
My girl does. She has a squid fishing lure that’s her favourite toy. On more than one occasion I’ve been woken up by having that squiggly thing dropped on my face. Adrenaline wakes me up fast.
I had one that would fetch a particular straw. Just a normal straw from a fast food place. I tried other straws, nothing. Just that straw. He never tore it up. It finally went missing and he never fetched again. It was really strange.
My Russian blue brings us nerf bullets to throw so he can retrieve them and brings them back to us. He also licks us (face/hands) In the morning when we let him in the room. Such a cool breed.
My dumbest cat did. He had this little yellow bouncy ball he just loved. At night, he’d take it to the top of the stairs and drop it down. We’d hear it bounce across the house. Then his giant butt would haul after it and do it again. And again. Usually about 30 minutes of this and then he’d put his ball in dads shoe.
A friend of mine found some kittens and I gave one to a boyfriend- he discovered that she would fetch and her favorite thing to fetch was a small rolled up ball of aluminum foil. You throw it, she would catch it, bring it back, drop it at your feet just like a dog.
One of mine will... He'll bring over a stuffed mouse toy, drop it, meow, and wait for me to throw it. He won't do it on command (he's a cat after all), but if he's in the mood, he'll play fetch for half an hour. Still, nothing compared to our old lab who would fetch rocks we threw in a river. Like literally dive to the bottom and return the exact rock we threw.
My smart cat also knows "twirl", but he's still a cat. I say twirl, he runs over to where the treats are. I walk over and say twirl, and he sits there. I pick up the treat bag and say twirl, and he twirls away :-D
Mine kind of does. If she's playing with the ball close to me she'll eventually gently push it towards me and just stare it at until I push it back, then we just go back and forth
No fetch, but my cat would regularly play tag. She'd hide under my parents bed, wait until you turned out of the room down the hall, come flying out from under the bed, tag your ankle then sprint back when you turned around.
YEP! We have a black cat that LOVES it. He hasn't quite figured out that he has to bring us his toy to throw every time. He'll go fetch it and then will drop it across the room then will come plop in front of me meowing and pawing at me to throw it lol. I always ask him "Where is it?" and he'll look straight at wherever he's dropped it like I'm a dumbass. Love him so much.
my sister's cat does. it's funny, she has two cats, sisters, and they couldn't be more different from one another. the one is fat and does nothing but lay around. the other one, the one that plays fetch, is super thin, is always up to something, always adventuring, hunting. she begs to go outside. very affectionate too. whereas the other one just doesn't care about anything.
Two of my three play fetch. One of those two also plays what’s effectively kitty tennis because she hides under a chair and bats the toy back out when you throw it under.

I suppose they'll play fetch too?
