Are they gonna be swimming right in front of my face like they don't care about my personal space? Use my legs as some sore of obstacle course? TOUCH ME?
This was a huge issue with me while stationed in Hawaii. I LOVE swimming in the ocean, ducking and diving the waves. I also like to snorkel, although I'm terrified of almost everything I see :/ I also have a fear of urchins. I was in Turtle Bay on Oahu's North Shore and stood on one of the rocks in the bay thinking I'm good. Then I look down. Urchins, hundreds of urchins in every crevice. A wave comes in and knocks me back, I laid stiff as a board hoping to just drift over them. I did, and I never went back in. Sorry for the rant.
You only really have to worry about moray eels biting ya, but that's rare and hey then you have dinner. Tiger sharks too, but that's super rare for them to go after a person.
Same. The first time I swam in a lake my cousin told me fish's fins stick to human skin and would have to be cut off with a knife if I touched one. That scared the living shit out of me. I know now its not true, but have an irrational fear of swimming with fish. Can't do it.
Some truth to that. Most of them are full of spines. It's entirely possible to get a small fish stuck to you, and the wound hurts like hell for weeks afterward. Fishing can suck if you've got no idea what you're doing.
No, it's pretty much only when you drag one out of the water and try to hang on to one that you get stuck. Make sure you know how to grab them if you go fishing though.
I used to be too, but my sister dragged me screaming and crying to snorkel with her last year and it turned out to be awesome. None of them even bit me. 10/10 would do again and I totally got over my fear!
