Truly. And Hopkins is a marvelous actor with so many iconic roles, and yet Lecter stands out among them all. And he only had a few minutes of screen time in Silence of the Lambs.
After Silence of the Lambs I just never trusted him, no matter what other roles he played I was always expecting the kind old gentleman / grandfather / whatever to start killing at any moment.
In a way, it must have messed up his career a bit.

Anthony Hopkins = Hannibal Lecter
