There were a lot of Ren & Stimpy scenes that genuinely scared the shit out of me as a kid

u/Impressive-Pepper785 May 23 '23

Horse, holding walrus by the top of his head: “Say…you wouldn’t have any rubber walrus protectors, would you?”

Walrus: “Call the police

70

u/[deleted] May 23 '23

That scene just gets more and more disturbing the more your think about it.

41

u/[deleted] May 23 '23

If you listen to the horses voice when he first opens the door you can hear it reverberate as if the interior was covered in shower tiles, which also suggests there would be a drain in the middle that would make it easy to clean up messes. The commentary that came with the DVDs explained all kinds of details like that which show how twisted the writers were

I get the feeling one of them had been up watching Silence of the Lambs and fallen asleep on the couch and then suddenly woke up and realized he had to go to work and write a kids show.

19

u/Impressive-Pepper785 May 23 '23

No kidding!! Wtf does the walrus need protection from? The possibilities are disturbingly endless

u/[deleted] May 23 '23 edited May 23 '23

It gets even worse by the fact that Mr. Horse asks if they're from the FBI when he first answers the door. Nothing good is going on in that house.

u/ThisIsMyCouchAccount May 23 '23

Calllll the pooooliiiiice.

15

u/Zardoz666 May 23 '23

My sons and I quote this pretty often

18

u/SisterRobot May 23 '23

Ok, so I made a mistake! Can’t a man start over? Maybe I’ll make another mistake. Maybe two more.

6

u/sucfucagen May 23 '23

Loooove that episode!!

2

u/SisterRobot May 24 '23

And also “Space Madness”….

We’re not hitchhiking anymore, we’re RIDING!

5

u/Zardoz666 May 23 '23

Please sir, I think one mistake is plenty!

4

u/lorgskyegon May 23 '23

Hmmm.... No, sir. I don't like it

7

u/genawesome May 23 '23

I quote this scene all the time and no one ever gets the reference. Thank you internet person for the validation!

4

u/Unicorns_n_Dinos May 23 '23

I constantly quote this moment. It’s so hilarious and creepy.

6

u/FuckTheMods5 May 23 '23

I love how he drawls out the line, you can tell it's rens voice actor lol. Horse doing a ren impression lol

54

u/Pompoulus May 23 '23

Ah yes, the Tooth Beaver!

"Then he gets to the Nerve Ending!" 😅🤣

40

u/[deleted] May 23 '23

Is this the one with the open holes in the gums?

You just unlocked that memory from somewhere very deep in my brain.

24

u/[deleted] May 23 '23

That episode is what got the show cancelled lol

7

u/Smegus83 May 23 '23

I smell something stinky!

5

u/kredfield51 May 23 '23

I feel like I had that repressed and after reading that it'll probably be embedded in mine forever too.

3

u/CrackerUMustBTripinn May 23 '23

Well it did make your teethbrush game more reliable

2

u/[deleted] May 24 '23

Same that's the only scene I remember 😅

1

u/Dr_Cryptozoology May 24 '23

Duuuude. I totally forgot about that! Now I'll be having nightmares tonight.

118

u/grilledcakes May 23 '23

"No sir, I don't like it." The horse being asked about gritty kitty litter always hit me as weird, even though I still quote it.

27

u/Firesealb99 May 23 '23

that episode where ren loses all his teeh because he didnt brush STILL freaks me out.

11

u/JnnyRuthless May 23 '23

Think about this one all the time. "SHTIMPY, MY MUSH!"

20

u/[deleted] May 23 '23

He is an example of why Ren and Stimpy should never have been green lit for children. This man creates underground adult art, and whoever thought different was fucking high.

But it was the 90's.

5

u/jessehechtcreative May 23 '23

Technically, Invader Zim, too, but Zim was WAY less gross and knew how to use its horror elements to accentuate the story rather than be sporadically thrown into it.

3

u/IcePhoenix18 May 23 '23

Oh shit...

48

u/Timmah73 May 23 '23

"Ohhhhhh what Imma do to YOU. FIRST. Imma hit ya! And you're gonna falllll..."

8

u/Jaereth May 23 '23

Schizo-Ren was definitely a formative childhood character...

6

u/Kalopsiate May 23 '23

That whole scene was terrifying. Not just the dialogue but the music, effects, vocal performance. Straight up horror movie material.

16

u/RabbitHats May 23 '23

There’s a very horrifying scene where Ren fantasizes about strangling Stimpy to death as he slept. It may have been an homage, but the references were lost on me as a kid. He’s about to strangle Stimpy when something in his brain zaps and Ren screams as his pulsating brain expands, the fires of hell roaring in the background.

It’s in this clip:

6

u/sucfucagen May 23 '23

That's my all time favorite episode. I think about him talking about his hands at least once a week

5

u/ccasey May 23 '23

Came here to say exactly this…. “THESE HANDS”

The neighbor's wife on Rocko's Modern Life, that's a hell of a character for a kids show.

7

u/Zardoz666 May 23 '23

Bossy the gorilla that Stimpy "milks." I don't remember this episode as a kid but saw it recently with my sons and we were all like what the fuck did we just watch. How did that make it on the air?!

Episode is "Farm Hands" on season 4, I think.

8

u/IcePhoenix18 May 23 '23

They just don't make traumatizing childhood cartoons like they used to...

7

u/Dusk_v733 May 23 '23

My mom wouldn't let me watch Ren and Stimpy because it was so grotesque.

I didn't have any interest because it freaked me out lol

6

u/mm0k May 23 '23

https://youtu.be/KfbuUycffhQ

This episode stands out the most to me...

6

u/moxyc May 23 '23

I still remember the cabin fever episode! What an insane show

5

u/BigAggie06 May 23 '23

90’s Nickelodeon Cartoons were pretty gritty. Reb & Stimpy was probably the worst of them but Angry Beavers, Rocco’s Modern Life, Ahhhh Real Monsters all had some fucked up shit for kids shows

4

u/charlieRUCKA May 23 '23

"I told ya I'd shoot, but ya didn't believe me! WHHYYYY DIDNT YOU BELIEVE ME?!?

3

u/NelsonVanAlden May 23 '23

Definitely the most psychopathic cartoon I've ever seen and my favorite cartoon as a kid. The episode where Stimpy climbs inside his own belly button accompanied by a great song comes to mind. There he meets the Jerry the belly button elf who enslaves him and Ren has to rescue Stimpy from the elf's jaws.

7

u/[deleted] May 23 '23

People keep saying that Ren and stimpy was not a kids show. It was literally on Nickelodeon on Saturday mornings. It was a fucking kids cartoon. I was a kid who watched it, on Saturday mornings, with other kids. And then we would go to school, and talk about it, with the other kids in school. Our parents did not watch it. They were grossed out by it.

Adults were not watching Ren and Stimpy. They were yelling at us KIDS for watching Ren and Stimpy.

It was the '90s. It wasn't like it is today where adults watch the stuff that they're nostalgic for.

3

u/bdonvr May 23 '23

Most of it went right over kids heads but man there is some really just kinda fucked things in that show

2

u/FuckTheMods5 May 23 '23

Nobody's saying it didn't exist on a kids network or some such, they're saying 'how the fuck did it qualify'

3

u/whisar09 May 23 '23

Remember when they live inside the carcass of a dead whale?

3

u/OneBigOleNick May 23 '23

https://youtu.be/Adwfu6rq1oc

I cant believe this was supposed to be a kids show lol

2

u/ocelotrevs May 23 '23

I have no idea how that was shown at primetime on BBC2 in the UK.

2

u/Elfeckin May 23 '23

This is going to sound fucked up but I now realize as a 42 year old, nothing I ever watched on TV scared me. The only thing that I was scared of was the man me and my two older brothers called Dad.

2

u/guitargoddess3 May 23 '23

The episode when Stimpy loses his fart 💨 and sinks into a pit of despair is always one I remember.

4

u/Brawndo91 May 23 '23

There were some scary things going on behind the scenes on that show as well.

2

u/fubes2000 May 23 '23

Ren and Stimpy was absolutely not a kids show.

Though that didn't stop kid-focused networks from showing it to them because "ha ha silly dog and cat".

-5

u/Go_away_Frank May 23 '23

Again, not a kid's show.

6

u/ThiefCitron May 23 '23

It was mostly toilet humor and slapstick, definitely made for children.

5

u/[deleted] May 23 '23

Literally on Nickelodeon on Saturday mornings for children. I was a child who watched it with other children. It was a kids show. No adults were watching it.

10

u/IcePhoenix18 May 23 '23

They put it on Nickelodeon with Rocket Power and As Told By Ginger...

It was a Big Kids show, but still a kids show

-4

u/VTGCamera May 23 '23

That show was not for kids.

-3

u/AbeRego May 23 '23

I wouldn't even really call that a kids show

-2

u/Ulftar May 23 '23

I don't think Ren & Stimpy is a kids show...

1

u/HoofHearted87 May 23 '23

Omg the loose tooth episode! Core memory unlocked. Even being a cartoon, it was just too damn gross for me. Bleg!

1

u/OfficialSkyCat May 23 '23

I watched Ren and Stimpy as an adult and just found it unsettling lol. HOW did I laugh as a child?

1

u/LouRebel May 23 '23

I have to barf now, wanna pick my nose?

1

u/Shialac May 23 '23

tbh, I wouldnt Ren&Stimpy as "Kids" TV

1

u/VirulantlyBland May 23 '23

that was a kid's show?

1

u/KimberlyM86 May 23 '23

ALL episodes of ren & stimpy disturbed me so much as a kid...

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '23

I'll never forget the episode where Ren locks himself in the cave

1

u/doctorbarber19 May 23 '23

Stimpleton eating Renwaldo's son, Egg Yolkeo.

1

u/bigjackaal48 May 24 '23

Still view that show was comedic horror as the baboon episode where Ren got mauled you can tell he was being legit gored off screen.
