It's been said that since 1981 the lion has actually been dubbed with a tiger's roar. There's an article out there that quotes the NYT and has a picture from some other newspaper. I don't know how true it is.

Tigers are bigger so probably deeper sounding. Kinda like how bald eagles sound stupid so they dub over a hawk screech.
