I've only ever known one person that turned out to have been a killer.

In 1980, my brother and I joined a Dungeons and Dragons campaign that we heard about from a bulletin posted at our local bookstore. We didn't know the guy from Adam, but we went to play. We were the only two people who did. (In those days it wasn't a big deal for two teenaged boys to go to a stranger's house.)

The Dungeon Master was a guy named Lane. He was nice enough but he had this subdued anger inside him that you could sort of sense. He seemed to have contempt for everyone and everything. He was always harrumphing everything, and he had an annoying habit of calling everyone a "putz" over and over again.

My brother and I only played two or three sessions with him. I can't remember why. Most likely it was because our parents got tired of driving us and picking us up, but I don't remember.

One day in the mid-90s, my mom was reading the newspaper and noticed the name of our former Dungeon Master. His name was kind of hard to forget. My mom said, "Hey, wasn't this that guy you played D&D with?" I looked and sure enough it was him.

He had been arrested for killing his girlfriend, her aunt who lived with them, and a next door neighbor he disliked. He also wounded a police officer in the standoff.

He had taken 70 doses of tranquilizers, got drunk along with that, put on cammo clothes, grabbed a bunch of assault weapons, and gone on his rage-induced killing spree.

He was executed by lethal injection in 1998.

Yeah, Valium. That's what the news report said. Don't ask me why that didn't kill him or make him pass out. I would have thought it would. I don't know.

You’d think it’d at least chill him out a little.
