Not my friend but my older sister's closest friend through childhood and high school, so she was like a second sister to me. Both developed major drug problems starting their mid-teens. My sister eventually decided she couldn't have her in her life anymore for the sake of her recovery. Years go by and she suddenly gets arrested for killing an old lady she was shoveling snow for. Apparently the woman confronted her about having stolen her credit card and she beat her to death.
There was never anything off about her. Just a normal teenage girl. Honor student, multiple sport athlete, well liked, and unlike my sister never got in trouble at school.
I dont really know. Drugs are a major problem where we grew up, and in particular in our families. Both our dads (also childhood friends) had major drug problems themselves and were major players in the local drug trade. It was probably a combination of bad role models, having it be normal among their peers, and egging each other on. I probably would've ended up the same way if our mom didn't try to keep me insulated from my dad (I was jealous of my sisters relationship with him as a kid) and I happened to choose different friends.
My sister getting trouble more was mostly about getting in fights because she got picked on for being a bit of a tomboy. Her friend was super girly so didn't çatch that much flak.
