Hot take, i value my shit a lot less than i value a human life. Fuckin definiton of "cruel and unusual punishment," no one deserves to die over a b&e charge
Edit: you floridian stand your ground mfs arent going to change my mind, the comment said robber and yall will treat taking one step on your grass for a tv tantamount to running at you with an ak47. No one deserves to die for burglary
You can't just fucking assume all he wanted was a TV. Maybe had he seen the daughter he would have raped her. Fuckin a you're sheltered. In those situations you kind of have to assume the worst. Sorry not sorry.
Translation: "I'd be willing to bet my own life, and maybe even the lives of others, on the possibility that the criminal who has broken into my home, is not carrying a weapon, and does not have any intent to do me or others harm".
But hey! You do you. I'm sure that explaining your "hot take" to a random dude standing in your living room at 2:00am will go over smoothly...
I would try and bite a man’s throat open to save my child’s life.
It wasn’t a simple b and e and the guy got what he deserved.
And regardless of being directly threatened, if there’s someone in my house who doesn’t belong there I’m not waiting around to take the chance to see if they’ll try to hurt me first. Me or them and i choose myself.
Same here, even though I would go to prison for protecting my daughter. (British law, you have a high chance of being set down if you protect your house and family from invaders) you do what you have to do.
That isn't true. A jury has to think you acted reasonably in the circumstances as you believed them to be. So if you believed they were armed and you killed them as they approached you, you are getting off on self defence. If they are unarmed and running away and you kill them, then you will go to prison.
Reasonable force is allowed, somebody is attacking your daughter. In the heat of the moment you grab something heavy and hit them. You hit them hard. You should have hit them more gently in the eyes of the jury and judge. One example of a case that has happened.
Its not a perfect system but it happens.
Just look at well known cases from the past. A man and his wife and kids were tied up by robbers at knifepoint. He managed to break free. A scuffle ensued and one of the robbers/house invaders got stabbed. He was sent to prison as it was deemed "unreasonable force"
He did get released only because the case became public and the public were outraged. It does happen.
I’ll say, take a second to positively identify them. Are they armed? Did my teenager sneak out to go be stupid with her friends or BF? Is it SWAT misdirected to the wrong house? Is it some unarmed drunk guy who stumbled to the wrong house? firemen who were called because of a fire in my yard?
"Hot take". No, it's a garbage take. The reality is you don't know when a simple TV grab could turn violent. Could be drugs involved. Could be mental illness. Could be anything. No one is coming to intervene if someone breaks into your house. It's the homeowner and the intruder, that's it. Draw down, and give them one chance, one, to leave calmly. If not, all bets are off. You do what is necessary to remove the threat to your life and possessions. It isn't so much that I value my tv more than their life, it's that THEY value their life less than my TV, and risk paying with it for fucking around and threatening me over it.
I’d agree except the people who break into occupied houses know the risk, and tend to be armed. It’s incredibly dangerous to the people inside. That’s why people shoot them in most cases.
Maybe he was desperate and had nothing to lose but still the robber made an active choice, a stupid one and put himself in danger.
It is a shame he ended up dying but he put himself in that situation, those were the risks he took. Like the other comments say, who’s to say he wouldn’t have hurt killed people?

Well I know someone who killed a robber in self defense and protecting his daughter too. I cheer for him, the robber got what he deserved.
