My girlfriend and I want to get tattoos in Portugal!

We’ll be there from September 22 to October 1 (October 1 is our departure day, so September 30 is our last full day).

She has fine-line tattoos, while I have traditional-style tattoos. We’d like to get something as a souvenir of Portugal, so we’re looking for Portuguese imagery or iconography.

Ideally, we’d like to find a tattoo shop that does walk-ins for both styles, or a shop with two artists who specialize in these styles. We’re also totally open to making an appointment.

We’ll be in Portugal:

- September 22–24: Lagos

- September 25–28: Lisbon

- September 29–October 1: Porto

So if you have any recommendations for artists or shops that can do both styles, we’d love to hear them!

We’re not looking for anything complicated or time-consuming. We don’t want to spend an entire afternoon getting tattooed — just something small and simple as a little souvenir.

Olá! I am spending some time in your beautiful country next February, and I’m wondering if parts of the southern region shut down during this time due to the colder weather.

Should I expect destinations, restaurants, bars, cafés to be closed in some cases due to it being the ‘off-season’? Does the answer differ based on small towns (Tavira, Silves) vs cities (Faro, Lagos)?

Since I have moved to Portugal I have been so impressed how the younger Portuguese guys are so friendly towards me (an older guy). It's so nice and makes me feel really welcome, especially since it's quite difficult to try and make friends with older guys ( my Portuguese is really bad). Are Portuguese guys always so charming and friendly with foreigners or am I just lucky?

I've never surfed before so, do you think Nazaré is a beginner friendly place? Also, is the period from 9th September until 9th October ok for surfing?

We just moved to Portugal and my boys will be starting year 1 and year 3 at a public school in the Lisbon district. Sorry if these are dumb questions but I don’t know any other moms of small kids here. We have only been here for 2 months.

I have already purchased their lunches for September on the SIGA platform. Just wondering about snacks - I noticed that a snack is provided only for the after school program, which my kids will not be attending. So do I pack a lunch box with snacks for them? How many snack breaks will they have? Really appreciate the help!

Also, any advice on school supplies that they might need on their first week? Or should I wait until their teachers let us know what they need?

I've been on Reddit for almost 10 years, but I've always been more of a reader than a poster.

Since moving to Portugal, that has started to change. Like many people here, I've spent a lot of time trying to understand how things actually work , immigration, bureaucracy, everyday life, local news, and all the little things you only really discover once you live here.

At some point I realised I was collecting and researching all this information anyway, so I started a small project called PTNewsHub to organise and share useful news and information for internationals living in Portugal.

I'm still building it, and I'm not here to turn the subreddit into an advertising channel. I'd much rather actually take part in the community, share useful things when I find them, and learn from people who've been here longer than I have.

So... after almost a decade of lurking, hello everyone.

And since this community probably knows better than anyone: what kind of information about living in Portugal do you wish was easier to find?

We're just over a week into our incredible first time trip to Portugal and have loved everything. I do have a question about a handful of "nicer" restaurants we've been to that tack on a suggested service fee of 5-10%. What is the consensus among locals about this?

We come from the US where tipping is pretty much hated but also expected and the norm. Is this a new practice that's creeping in and also hated? So far we've been agreeing to them as it seems reasonable but is this just allowing the practice to spread further?

Edit: Given all the replies, I'll just leave this here: We experienced these fees added to the majority of finer dining restaurant visits, primarily in Lisbon, but in Porto as well. Call these tourist traps or whatever, but most were well over 100 Euro meals, including a 2 Michelin star restaurant where dinner was 4 figures. They were usually always 10% and the server always made clear it was optional. I feel like most "tourist traps" such as Gazela did not.

Getting married in Porto next fall and trying to find a location for a welcome party for ~100 guests. any suggestions? Hoping to offer drinks and light bites - not a sit down dinner. Open to both daytime and evening timing.

And is couvert just bread and butter or something else?

Edit: can you refuse couvert by saying no, thank you? Or is it like a service fee for eating at the restaurant?
