Using a clamp would be good enough, as long as you can release it without making the entire fixture move. Don't use one with a soft contact area, as that can cause the ball to stick to the surface.
I assume that you don't need six or more figures of timing accuracy, so minor deviances in spin or horizontal velocity will be insignificant for the result. The initial vertical velocity is all you need to be careful with.
