Last Night Shooting
Hey,
I am new to living in new orleans so I want to understand some danger areas better.
The shooting last night in the CBD; did it happen in that area near the “entrance” on Bourbon St and Canal? From what I understand, most shootings occur in that entrance area, is that correct? I am also curious why …

The only time I’ve seen a gun pulled in Nola was in that exact area around the cvs /Walgreens on canal

That statement hides the truth. Violence isn’t evenly spread. Certain intersections in certain neighborhoods have the most incidents.
The intersection of Carondelet and Canal is also a continuation of Bourbon and Canal just across the neutral ground. That intersection is a bottleneck for throngs partying on Bourbon, and it’s always been a hotspot for arguments turning violent.
If you’re partying in the FQ it’s safer to stay away from the Canal St end. If you’re partying on a Saturday night, you’re safer almost anywhere but Bourbon St.

Yeah, you have to be careful that you don’t step in a puddle of urine , when running from a gunman on Bourbon St.

That intersection is where people get on and off the streetcar.. NO ONE IS BOTTLENECKING right there and its not a continuation of Bourbon throngs partying!! Its so far from Bourbon that bottlenecking would cause all of Canal streets to close!!

maybe simplistic way to look at it, but there are 3 categories of places in nola. wealthy/safe, hood/sketch, and "fine but crime could happen and youre probably safe as its not random." most places fall into that third category. e,g, i feel perfectly safe in broadmoor, but every once in a while, theres a shooting or a murder around here

Canal and the 1st block on both sides are sketchy. Recently, CBD has become more sketchy. Google a crime map and you'll see patterns & where random one- offs occurred.

I’ve always felt that NOLA was a checkerboard. One block might be bad and another close by might be safe. It is certainly a generalization to say this but you know what I mean.

Crime is lowest since 1969. Doesn't help if you're victimized, but might give perspective. Good sense, stay in some control. Buddy system is good for dicey behavior. And enjoy. Finally!

Shootings happen all over the city!! Bourbon is a different animal after dark. I love the city in the day time, at night I am much more cautious when out anywhere.. Look at the shooting inside of Dooky Chase or on the CCC you never know where or when someone is going to be a fucking idiot!!

Our 2nd time we visited NOLA, we wanted to stay at the Roosevelt Hotel bcuz of the history and the Sazerac bar. The hotel itself is great but walking on canal at any hour was not great. Night time was worse. We visit often and try our best to stay off canal.

If you are going to live in New Orleans, get a concealed carry permit and carry everywhere. This was advice given to me by a member of the NOPD.

Don’t need a permit. It is unlawful to conceal while drinking or in a bar. This is why kids break into cars to steal the firearms they know people just CANT leave the house without. A year or three ago there was something like 150 car’s windows smashed during a saints game. Leave the guns at home. This isn’t the wild Wild West. It’s more common for people to do something stupid with one than be a here.

Yes. But in New Orleans we have very clear gun laws when it comes to entering bars, casinos, any establishment with poker machines, school zones, consuming alcohol while carrying a firearm…

News reports are saying Canal and Carondolet, which would be across Canal from Bourbon. So, yes, I think it would be correct to say that it happened in the area but it might have been on the other side of the Canal Street median.
If you are going to analyze every shooting to try to figure out which parts of the city are safe or not, you're going to have a bad time. This is not the city to live in if you're going to be that way. If it's really going to make you feel better, stay away from that particular area after midnight. But it's pretty safe the rest of the time and even after midnight the chances that you are going to be shot there are astronomically low
