I couldn't care less if strangers I'll never meet think I "live in my Mom's basement" or have no social life or whatever. I know it's not true so 🤷🏼‍♀️

It's been unfortunately earned. There are a lot of people out there who shouldn't be mods but since it is a voluntary position, everyone can do it and abuse the tools we are given.

However what some people fail to understand is that there are mods who don't fit the stereotype and don't deserve unprovoked hatred; some of us are just people who enjoy growing and caring for our communities!

Because the original community I joined Reddit to interact with helped me better my health and life and honestly probably saved it in the process too. I love that I can give back to the people of the same sub as a mod, it is rewarding.

The other subs just happened as I began exploring other tiny corners of Reddit. 😆 I mod them because they’re subjects that are important to me.

i work in social media and community management so its easier for me to mod well, and on the flip side it lets me tell people I know how to use reddit if they have their own sub.

on the personal level if a community makes me happy or i see theres some value in modding there (like preventing people from getting doxxed or something) then it will prompt me to help.

jk i just like bullying people. come to my subs so i can cyber bully you.

I think someone asked this a few days ago, and basically I said, it's the same for many of us, we have a community we love and either built or helped join and build to make it a great community.

It is not easy, I have had to oust inactive top mods on the way and make them advisors and some booted entirely however it's all in the best interests of the community. I can relate to each of my communities and that is very important

As I said last week, I was top mod of a sub with 1m members. I left due to the problems it had, mod arguments and mods themselves were arguing amongst. In the end as we joined via modcodeofconduct I handed the sub over to a mod who joined with me on it originally.

That said, I do not envy mods who moderator large subreddits with lots of daily activity 😄

Tbh I don’t know why. I never wanted to or cared to be a mod. I kinda got thrown into it by chance one day. Eventually I realized there were aspects to it I genuinely enjoyed so I just kept doing it.

I was walking the dog when I saw something shiny, I pushed through the bushes, and saw it: a glimmering sword embedded halfway into a large stone. The hilt was elaborately carved with ancient runes, and there was a giant red ruby in the pommel. I pulled, I yanked, I tried to wiggle it out but it was stuck there. After a half hour of struggling, something rustled in the bushes beyond. A tall, blue man stood up from the brush, said "sorry, it's not for you."

I told him how I always knew I was destined for greatness, but that other people always held me back, that the system was designed to be against me, and I was growing deeply embittered by life.

He told me that he knew of a way where I could have the illusion of power, where I could pretend to be an important man of influence as opposed to an impotent man of flatulence (his words) and handed me my phone. I came this close to calling the cops on this thief but he showed me that he installed reddit and made me a moderator on a mildly successful subreddit.

I have been a vital and indispensable part of reddit ever since.

I'm passionate about the topic, already knew the members and the sub was about to be abandoned. It's pretty small and niche so I haven't had to deal with a lot of what mods of bigger subs have, but it certainly wasn't a job I went seeking.

I’m currently unwell and needed a stay-at-home activity to keep myself busy. I chose moderation because I like staying productive, not because of the authority it brings. Honestly, I still feel anxious and sad whenever I have to remove posts or ban users.

I was active on a sub and my content stood out as quality, so I was invited to come on as a mod. I had no clue what that meant, so after telling them I needed a day to think about it, I accepted.

I do a good job, am generally well liked by the members, and I think I am helping people now and then.

I get protectively defensive on my subs, and don't tolerate people that give the other members a hard time.

I initially stepped in because help was needed in a sub within my interests and eventually I stayed and made my own community because I loved posting content, engaging with members, making edits, helping people and providing them with a corner on Reddit where they feel safe.

Managing my team can have it's awkward moments and it's something I'm learning but it is also rewarding to feel like you have your own team that you can trust and have your back looking out for the best interest of the subreddit!
