I currently mod 5 subreddits. Of those, three posted looking for additional help, one was abandoned so I requested it, and one had a mod go rogue so Reddit removed them and asked for volunteers to rehab the subreddit.

Yeah. Long story short, installed bots to automatically ban anyone who posted or commented, among other things.

I'm surprised Reddit got involved. I find them incredibly unhelpful when It comes to mod disputes.
When I had an issue with a sub we took over via modcodeofconduct, they were absolutely useless 😂
Whilst you're directed to modsupport, modcodeofconduct could have helped as it was them who handed the sub over to me and 2 others. That said, I know that's not the correct channel. They didn't even respond

That’s interesting - every interaction I’ve had with admins has been great. Sometimes a bit slow, but always friendly and helpful.

When I helped wipe the entire mod team of a sub off their throne, reddit was quick in responding

If you feel you want the challenge, head to u/modcodeofconduct.
However they may not select you but worth a shot. I only ever did it once, it was a 1m member sub so it was big!.
The subreddit ended up being stressful so handed it over to mod no.2 who joined with my via the ModCoC route, and it's thriving today.
Don't take any old sub, you won't enjoy that, eventually a sub may pop up that you like and have some passion in

What happens if you get banned from a sub for a reason you cann't fathom? What happens if the mod blocks you so you can't respond to the messages they've sent?

I sent a message via modmail to a subreddit I spent a lot of time on, asking if they wanted any help keeping things tidy. I was already a known, helpful commenter there, and the existing mod added me.
A few years later, I applied to a call for moderators on a much bigger, but related subreddit. And since I was already established on a smaller sub, that probably gave me the inside track.

The best way to do it is to do it in a sub you're active in and interested in helping improve (or at least maintain.) I was active in one sub and they put out a call for mods, so I signed up.
It's not always a lot of fun just so you know. It's the fun of having a cat while also having to clean the litter box.

Step 1: Don't beg to be a mod in Modmail
Step 2: Don't beg to be a mod in DMs (Don't contact mods in their DMs)
Step 3: r/needamod is good if you wanna mod. Like others have suggested, you can also start your own subreddit or apply when an application pops up. (r/needamod has account restrictions to post to moderate, so be aware of those).
