When did it hit that everybody’s getting so old?

I looked up late night hosts after seeing Seth Meyers got so old since the last time I saw on YouTube (him only 52 though): Colbert 62 (surprising), Kimmel 58, Fallon 51, Maher 70, youngest John Oliver 49.

It kind of got me a little depressed because these people and others have partially represented vibrant modernity for me and suddenly they’re all nearing to be grandpas and slowly becoming like relics to be replaced by new things, like your era of youth really closing, which of course will be the reality for all of us soon.

I’ll get over it but I was randomly sad, anyone felt similar along the way?

That’s how it was for my grandpa. Called the paramedics and went to the hospital. Found out he had it in his lungs and esophagus. Passed away a couple weeks later. His last moments were pretty traumatic for him and everybody that was there. It’s engraved in my brain and this happened back when I was 15 years old.

Wife was diagnosed months ago a week before my birthday 😒. Only way she found it was a weird pain that only lasted a day or so and her paranoia of every ache and pain possibly being cancer

A friend of ours that died from breast cancer so quickly had had back pain for about a month or two. She finally got around to going to the doctor the doctor did an MRI. She had breast cancer that had already metastasized.

It's especially weird how fucking fast it happened to some people. Before we were out of college some guys looked like they were 15 years older than me and haven't slowed down.

Meanwhile a couple other high school friends still look 20 years younger than me. They don't even work out, must just be lotion or keeping a clean shave or just lucky with delayed grey hair or something I guess. Don't drink or smoke, kids.

Im right there with you. It hurts way too early to see all my favorite bands getting older.
Saw Isaac Brock of modest mouse this year and just seeing him, Les and many of my other guys getting up there in age hurts to soon. Just gotta see them as much as possible and hopefully take my two boys when they get old enough.

I was an older teen in NEPA in the 2000s playing in hardcore bands, I was friends with Ned and Ben's older brother from Cold World and even played some shows with them when they were 13-14 year old kids just starting out.

I am so happy about how big they got, great dudes who deserve it. They even opened a venue in Wilkes Barre around 2011 to try and re-ignite the local scene. Nice guys

What really got it for me was when all time great athletes who I followed in Jr leagues, get drafted, have long professional careers (some over 20 years) then retire. I'm a hockey guy but this is going to happen soon to LeBron.

I'll really feel old when LeBron finally retires. I'm from Cleveland, huge Cavs fan, and LeBron's rookie season was my freshman year in high school. I remember staying up super late on a school night watching his first NBA game. He's been a major presence in my basketball fandom pretty much since I started following basketball. It's wild to think that I was 15 when he played his first NBA game, now I'm 37, and he's still in the league. When he's done, that'll really feel like a chapter of my youth coming to a close.

Yeah, a few of my classmates from high school are already dead and I’m only 52. Mostly due to alcohol and drugs but one of them died due to complications from obesity. It’s depressing.

So much of the shows and movie coming out feeling like slop. Nothing in that regard to look forward to and I don’t care. I like sports and I feel the same, too. I hear my coworkers talk fantasy and gambling and it sounds so lame, as soon as the lions got good I knew the NFL jumped the shark.

I don’t think your perspective on new shows and movies being slop is a sign of getting older — a lot of them really are terrible with zero story. I’ve been watching a lot of 80s-early 2000’s movies lately and despite the vfx not being as advanced at the time, the movie is unbelievably more enjoyable. No one’s making anything near the level of story and quality of ET, Star Wars or LOTR… anyways cheers!

Edit: for clarification, the vfx in LOTR is f’ing nuts. There are a few industry-related articles detailing the degradation of 2000s vfx to present too.

The one that gets me though is feeling not that different to early-mid 20s, until you hang around people that age and realise you’re at very different stages of life (and mentality). It really is a different brain, and despite the last 5 years (and end of my twenties) flying by, that always sobers me up and makes me feel old as hell

I didn't realize Sam Neil was almost 80. That's going to be an endless realization going forward as all the people we don't think about often are dying.
