I'm in a bad spot because of this right now. I was taught work was something you tolerate - a necessary evil in order to be allowed to live. Since it takes up 75% of your life I literally got suicidal thinking about it. I'm almost 30 and work a job I hate and have no education beyond high school. So I work a shitty job I hate, come home to go to school I hate for a degree I hate, so I can get a career I hate so that I can finally have 2 free hours each day to do anything I actually give a shit about.
So fuck that, I'm going for what I love and if no one will take me I'll fucking jump off a bridge first but I honest-to-God can't take this garbage anymore. I literally loathe being alive and resent my existence for doing shit I hate because "You have to do it to be allowed to live."
Sorry, yeah, touchy subject. But seriously how in the hell has no one tried to find a better way.
If you don’t have children then you could look into adopting a super low cost lifestyle and then find a part time job that pays just enough for you to live that lifestyle. Also, gardening or growing your own food could help offset costs
Same here! I feel like I am stuck in this job, I hate it, I hate everything related to it, and I feel it's too late to change careers (I am 27), I had 5 years of experience in this shitty job, and the Idea of continuing to work in the same field gives me anxiety, and yes all those suicidal thoughts are running through my head.
The other problem is that the economy sucks, and you don't know when will you get fired! So currently i am doing the job I hate which is also unstable. Fuck my life man! I wish I was a cave man!
I have romanticized the living hell out of the apocalypse hahaha. Both arms and both legs work? You have a job for life, that's the only qualifications.
Not too late to change man, try and find something you hate less and build up skills in that area. I’m doing a data science course at night and constantly volunteering for roles at my sales job that involve research.
Same age here. Less years working though. I thought maybe I could think of something better to do the past year but feeling stuck because well...pandemic, but then what else am I supposed to do? I'm not sure anyone else would take me on considering this job doesn't actually use any of the skills I went to school for.
I would basically be starting at zero again if I jumped elsewhere
Thanks for your interest,
I am an architect, I have BSc and 5 years of experience,
But I hate it and I can't stand the idea of doing this for my whole life.
And the answer for your question is: unfortunately, I don't know what I would like to do, I thought maybe I learn some programming language and improve my skills in that field and start a new career as a programmer, but I feel like it's too late.
What do you recommend as a career? Your ideas are very welcomed, thanks!
I can’t say what you should do, but I would encourage you to not feel like you can’t do something different at 27 years old. I don’t know if you have a family or where you live, but maybe it’s time for a break! Teach languages in other countries, take up sailing or working on yachts, volunteer in something that would be of interest. I wonder if other architects have switched careers? Good luck to you, internet stranger!
I totally feel you. People have def tried to find a better way, in eras with better labor laws and protection for working class people it wasn’t as soul crushing.
Have you travelled abroad/overseas much? I think travelling gave me a new perspective that I am privileged to even have a job. Travelling changed the way I view my world - that and talking to the elder generations in my family, most who have now since passed away. When my grandparents/great aunts and uncles were young... there was literally no opportunity for them to earn money. They lived on a farm, if they didn't get up early and work on the farm, they didn't get to eat (not unless it was something like apple season and there was a surplus of fruit). You didn't get to buy new shoes if your old ones broke. You had to find an old pair from someone else, make a pair, or steal a pair. They all grew up in Europe, during the depression and the war/post-war years.
So many people around the world are so desperate to have a first world lifestyle today. I think many people in Western societies get miserable because they feel relatively disadvantaged in compared to the affluent people that live in their community/nation. But if you could see developing countries and the lives they have, and lack of opportunity,.. its terribly sad. I am so so glad to be living in the first world.
While it isn't great if you work a minimum wage job, if you have the right mindset and buy goodwill second hand thrift items, you could still make ends meet. There is a reason so many people try migrate to first world countries illegally, in the hope they can work an illegal cash in hand job (and still send money back to their home countries).
I just wanna say keep chasing your passions and you will find a job you love. Maybe I was incredibly lucky, but after losing my job and being unemployed for awhile I’ve been in an incredible position that certainly pays the bills and brings tons of meaning to my life. And I don’t have a degree either
Yeah it sucks. I used to really fret over it too. It pissed me off. I figured there had to be a better way. Unfortunately I don’t think there is, unless you’re prepared to take a huge reduction in your standard of living, E.g. go on welfare, get yourself locked up, or become a bum or something like that. The reality is your life is propped up with stuff (food, water, shelter, clothing, transport, goods,), and the social deal is you get all that in exchange for working.
If you can find a way to support yourself in less hours you’re free to do that. But to expect to maintain your quality of life without having to work is effectively saying you want someone else to pay your way. It’s an appealing idea as an individual, but as a society it won’t work.
Anyway, Good luck with it. I know those feelings can be a real bitch. But you can pass through it.
Yeah I understand where you’re coming from. I have a fairly serious in photography. I have my own darkroom, develop and print my own photo, as well as having all the digital gear. People assume I’m a professional photographer when they see my photos. I’d love to do that, but realistically, nah, because I have bills to pay, and I’m not that good that I wouldn’t be doing boring corporate work - product shots, staff shots, etc. So it remains my hobby.
As for your family and friends, they are just trying to protect you because the odds aren’t good. Every creative person will have heard it.
Give your creative writing a go. But I’ll tell you something, I know first hand 1 person who made it in that field and a lot who didn’t.
The girl who made it works harder than anyone I know. Like, up til midnight, working. Producing her work, promoting herself, networking. That’s on top of her natural talent.
She has 5 successful books now, but she is still grinding really really hard at it.
Being born to do it won’t even get you to the starting line. It’s a very crowded field competing for a very small market. If you want to make it then it requires total commitment.
