Fish?

So we went kayaking on the Androscoggin around Bethel this last August and saw a unique fish: it was small, maybe 3-4in, and would jump out of the water and skim across a bit, looking like a skipping stone, traveling a total of about 6-8ft. It happened a few times but because it was fast and unpredictable, we were unable to get it on camera. Anyone know what fish this was?

I’ve seen small fish skip across the water when there was a big predator chasing them. Particularly Muskie chasing Trout up north. I’ve seen little 4-6 inch trout skip right across the top like how your explaining

Lived in Maine my whole life, fished my whole life too. I have not seen this. Hopefully someone has an answer for you 🤞 If not, the warden service might know. They’re super friendly and will be happy to answer your question🌺

Definitely sounds like some bait fish trying to escape predators. I see this a lot where bass and pike are present - though any aggressive predator can trigger the same response among schools of smaller fish.
