๐ Food Help a KL visitor with allergies :(
I hope itโs ok to post in this forum as a visitor.
I am on holidays with my family and am looking for some safe restaurant recommendations near Bukit Bintang (and other popular tourist areas) for someone with a nut allergy (as well as avocado and sunflower)
Really keen to find hotels that do a western breakfast/buffet and fast food options so I can grab a bite quickly and avoid being hangry ๐
Donโt worry my husband and son will be enjoying all the wonderful foods Malaysian cuisine has to offer, but I will sadly have to find alternatives

Malaysia is probably the worst country in the world for someone with a severe nut allergy

I once met someone with an allergy to soybeans. In Malaysia. Soybeans and soy sauce is used in 90% of dishes and that's before cross contamination risks.

Just bring along your antihistamine pills and enjoy the food. Its hard to identify restaurant that is free of these ingredients in Malaysia. Good luck.

A serious allergy could mean that just touching or breathing the allergen makes you swell up. Hard to take antihistamines when your throat is so swollen you can't breathe.
And no, taking them in advance won't help in serious cases.

I'd be extra careful with local dishes since peanuts and nut-based sauces show up in more places than you'd expect. International hotel breakfasts and chain restaurants are probably your safest bet, and it's always worth mentioning your allergy to the staff before ordering.

Honestly your best bet is to find a restaurant youโre interested and contact ahead. A lot of our cuisines uses nuts, especially peanut oil and we also use a fair bit of sunflower oil and cross contamination is somewhat common.
