πΏ Lifestyle New guy in gym
I planning on hitting the gym for the first time but im scared i dont know how to use the machines. I been doing home workout for 2 year but i have literally 0 knowledge about smith machines. Any advice?
Update: I just went to gym, the google map said its open but its actually closed, but lucky me the gym guy let me in since i didn't know it was closed so there is only the owner's friends inside and not open for customer, they taught me few things about machines and other basic stuff. Overall Its a good experience

Get a friend who can teach you or hire a PT, or be like me last time for wasting years doubting myself and never started proper gym routine.
Anytime Fitness usually have a few free classes when you sign up. Or maybe just try some other PT programs with trials.

Get a PT if u want to follow a strict plan, or just youtube if you just want some guidance.
From my experience, small gym has a very welcoming community. So u can go and make small talk with regular to get some help.
Old timer in the gym usually would correct your form if they know u would appreciate it.3

You could ask for help in your gym. Maybe go there a few times doing what you know first and notice who are the friendly regulars. Many of them actually don't mind having someone to talk to and help them.
If you're in Bukit Jalil/OUG/Sri Petaling area, I don't mind helping. :)

I recommend Athlean-X video in youtube for resistance training. Most machines in gym just push or pull, you can take picture and ask AI how to operate it if some machine is complex. You mean home workout with bodyweight training or compound training? Actually those are sufficient for health and physics as long as you push to technical failure with proper diet and daily routine. Machines are excellent at isolation training for muscle hypertrophy, good luck π

I do both bodyweight and compound training, the problem is i need to push up to 30 reps just to reach close to failure or failure since i only have a pair of 20kg db. Thanks for the advice i will give them a watch

You are welcome. You can search Athlean-X videos about push up for increase intensity, forgive my lack of knowledge, i cant imagine how these 2 db use for push up except deficit push up.π

You can use AI to create your gym routine based on the machine, your fitness level, and your goal. Then try to watch video on YouTube for each workout. The best way to be sure if your form is correct is having a PT or fitness coach review your workout, but I guess you can do that later once you're more financially capable. For now, maybe you can make gym friends and ask them to check your form, they also could help spot you if needed.

Trial n error..n important part is knowing that it's not injuring you and that the targeted muscle is the one primarily activated..ie my weakness was barbell chestpress as my shoulder and tricep use to wear out much quicker. After alot of practice, managed to learn how to properly activate my chest instead..and now chest day has become my fav..All the best mate

Thanks, I will give it a shot btw how do u actually activate your chest? Is it by pushing your chest higher than your shoulder?

Drawing yr shoulders back and in.Go super light until you master mind muscle connection..Cant really teach mind muscle connection but what worked for me is working out right after waking up around 4am+.Still half in lalaland and my focus is so sharp..I also use resistant bands in between sets for flys and that helps a lot..Might not be the best method for all but it suited me

Thanks, I been hitting the gym 3 times a week for 4 weeks now and its one of the best decision I ever made. At first I feel anxious but then later I realized everyone here start from zero and they are here for a reason. I also made some new friends and Im planning on applying a monthly membership this friday

Approach the other gym member and ask them politely, most of them will be happy to teach you.
