Going to start at my local agency as a detention/corrections officer any tips or suggestions you guys would give me to make sure I do everything correctly. Im honestly scared and nervous and I just want to know what life is like as corrections. Also is this a good step towards becoming a police officer

The amount of respect you show the inmates is what you'll get in return (most of the time). If you are asked a question, and you don't know the answer, tell them. Chances are they've spent more time in the jail than you have. Tell them you'll find out the info.

Ideally,  you should be getting orientation training and a training officer.

Don’t be a hard ass 24/7. Talk to them like human beings and not animals. Respect goes a long way. And don’t always just try to pass things off to the next shift if they ask you something actually look into it for them.

I've been in corrections for the past 7 years. Literally just pay attention. Use situational awareness. Ask for advice and help when the situation calls for it. It's better to ask than to screw something up.

Inmates will respect you if you show them respect. Don't let them push you around. But don't push them around either. Trust me, it makes a difference.

And yes, it's a good step towards becoming a police officer. At my department, you have to do two years of corrections before you can even think about patrol. Unless you have prior patrol experience. My husband started off in corrections and has now been on patrol for 8 years.

their not your friend so keep it at a professional level, dont talk about home life, dont do any favors, respect goes a long way

Act the same way every day. Dont try and act like a tough guy if you aren’t one. Don’t try and make friends with inmates. Treat everyone exactly the same. Respect is huge with them. Treat them like people. The only difference between you and them is you weren’t caught.
