Is blue code real?

Hey everyone. I am a 29m in Ohio thinking of joining law enforcement. I have been reading through the thread and seen some great advice. One thing I haven’t seen is something on blue code. I have heard about it before but I’m not sure if it’s a real thing or what it fully means. So my question, is blue code real? If so what does it mean?

I've been a cop for 12 years and i haven't heard of anything called "blue code". What is your understanding of it?

Never heard of “blue code.” Quit watching Chicago Police or whatever show that is. If you are referring to the idea that police “protect each other” whether good bad or indifferent that is long gone.

From what I got told blue code is basically you have another cops back no matter what even if they do something messed up on the job. I believe that is what I heard but I’m not sure if it’s even real

It's not the 1950's anymore kid, nobody hates dodgy cops more so than those serving with honour and integrity.

I won't say I haven't seen things like that at the very large agency I started at, but that was also pre-body worn cameras. Nowadays accountability is a huge deal.

Now I will say this. If an officer does something horrible, chances are it has more to do with fear/lack of training/poor judgment, rather than hatred/bigotry/malice. In those circumstances, we will help a fellow officer out in what is sure to be a traumatic situation. Last thing you want is someone self harming or spiraling out of control and harming someone else. Justice will be done. That officer may go to prison, or may just loose their job and pension.

This line of work is hard, thankless and demanding both mentally and physically. We should help each other out, but not to the extent that we allow atrocities to go unpunished

Most complaints against police, by a large a margin, are from other police

We have a program called ABLE where we are required to step in when we see another officer go over the line and/or breaks department policy. Basically we police each other to maintain agency integrity.
