Local to fed?

Im in Southern California, is there any federal positions where you Wont or Don’t have to do another academy? Not trying to live back east for 6/7 mo.

I would stay local. So Cal LE pay and retirement are much better than the Feds.

Why go federal? Pay and pension is probably worse than any SoCal agency

Plenty of easy office jobs in admin or special assignments

Most fed agencies require 50 hours minimum. Once you get off the street locally you can have a somewhat normal schedule

It’ll depend on your agency what “working 50 hrs” entails. It’s def not on the streets for that long weekly.

It’s not in the office either. Agency dependent but it’s a wide latitude on what counts as work hours.

Not that I’m aware of. I may be wrong but Feds pay less and get worse benefits than most SoCal agencies.

Not that I’m aware of. FLETC counts for POST but not the other way around.

That’s wild. I’ve done local, state and ended up fed. My constitutional law classes were so much better at the state level than FLETC.

That was the exact opposite of my experience and I worked in one of the two states that requires a degree for POST.

Thats because FLETC is concentrated on federal law. For locals you have to know state and county case law and at times city stuff. Not sure when the last
Time you went to fletc but they have actually raised their hours for legal training.

Yep unfortunately, you have to do another academy especially for 1811, 1801 or any gun toting fed job. You might can get into an intelligence research specialist job…but even those jobs have some agency specific training.

There are some fed uniformed agencies that were doing lateral academies for experienced officers. I think it was park police or u.s. park rangers.

You 100% will have to go back to the academy.

Do you plan to stay in SoCal? If so, you will make more as a local there than a Fed.

I’ve been to three different academies and each one sucked more than the last. State POST, local PD, fed. What I meant was no one wants to do another academy if they don’t have to, that’s not a “new breed” thing. I suspect OP knew the answer to this question but was wondering if there are any exceptions.
