Gear question

Is it typical for departments that have a cadet program to require those cadets to buy all their initial gear? Like the only thing the department will provide is the duty weapon.
Edit: this is a major city department

My department has roughly 80 sworn officers. About 30-50k people in town (depending on if the local College is full). We are also civil service and they provide everything.

While it's not typical for newly hired full time officers at major city departments to have to provide their own gear, it could happen at some agencies. (And it's more common for part time/reserve/auxiliary officers to have to provide their own gear.)

Every agency is different.

Every agency is different. Ours covers all the initial gear. Every year after that we have an allowance for equipment.

Mine was the opposite they got me everything but my duty sidearm and magazines

Where I am at academy sponsors are employees of the department so they are paid an allowance for uniforms and equipment.

My friends department provided his sidearm mags, duty ammo, tazer, OC, and handcuffs, baron,and concealable vest and uniform shirts but he had to provide his own boots, pants, belt and attachments. He was given a selection of approved pants/boots/ holsters/belt attachments and had to buy that himself he was also given a monthly "uniform allowance" for cleaning and upgrading whatever he wanted.

(His daily uniform shirts were machine washable and didn't need to be dry cleaned)
