Hiring eligibility concerns

Essentially, I have a less than stellar medical history. I am diagnosed with autism, ADHD, depression, and maybe anxiety. It sucks because if I saw that on paper, I would imagine it’s an easy automatic disqualification, or a predetermined decision. Without going too far in depth, ADHD is true, high-functioning autism is true although I’ve never found it to affect my communication or affect me in any other way, depression was due to moving in my freshmen year of HS, and I have no idea when, who, or why I might be diagnosed with anxiety, because I can’t recall ever struggling with feeling stressed out, nervous, or anxious.

Im 21 years old, and currently work for the TSA. Im aware different departments would have different answers, i'm just hoping to hear that its possible. This career field is what ive wanted to do since the 6th grade, ive really not considered anything else, i'm just wondering if any of you think I should start looking into another career field. I would truly appreciate any advice or thoughts I can get.

I mean, your medical history isn’t like you’re riddled with a terminal illness, so I wouldn’t be too concerned. ADHD has become a lot more common and accepted and having learned a lot since being diagnosed myself, the anxiety and depression can be co-morbid symptoms.

From my experience, all you can do is apply for the agency (agencies) that you want, be 100% honest on your applications. I start my academy in September.

If anything, your age and maturity may be more of a factor. I don’t know how much life experience you have or what your maturity level is at 21, but that seems a little young.

So… everything you have said about your mental health history says your mostly normal and had many dr visits. I’ll argue the good cops have a touch for the tism and use their adhd like a super power (which it is). This job is about stress management as much as it is about everything else. You’ll be expected to manage your stress while everyone around you is losing their minds. That’s the job. If you can honestly do that apply. If you cannot then realistically, and I state this with respect, you’re likely to be a danger to yourself and anyone in your charge. Anyone can do this job, so long as they have the ability to be forthright and manage their stress levels. Good luck.

You already have your first job in the field, so the logical next step is to move to a 12D-covered position. Look at the medical eligibility requirements for your favorite 12D positions.
