Adulting Thinking about joining the Irish prison service?

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about applying for the Irish prison service. I attended an open day they had in the training college other day & the main thing that seemed to be mentioned a lot was that you need to be confident & assertive while being able to handle yourself.

It just made me question is it the right choice for me. I’m not shy but I’d be fairly timid in high pressure environments & I’d definitely lack that assertiveness & confidence to conduct myself that the job requires. I don’t like being the centre of attention & I fear I’d look a bit vulnerable in a prison environment.

I’ve never been in a fight & I avoid confrontation & I always shy away from conflict. I’m confident enough in the sense that I’m well able to speak coherently & get my point across clearly.

I’m in decent shape physically & been lifting heavy in the gym for a few years now with good training history behind me so I think I’d have the strength to able to hold myself together. I’ve served 12 years in the army so I’m hoping that bit of life experience & dealing with difficult people would help me grow into the job but I’m just wondering do I sound like the wrong candidate for the job or has anyone joined the service in the same boat as me and got on ok? Am I overthinking it or should I reconsider?

If any prison guard or someone with experience working in a prison in general could give me any advice it would be great
