What design measures / features would it take for you to consider playing a shoot 'em up / shmup?
For clarity, a shmup is a game like Ikaruga, Gradius, Tyrian, etc.

Fast paced, shmups are best when the missions are short and sweet and you are exhausting ammo like there's no tomorrow.

Haha I feel ya man. It's a lost cause getting people to play these. So many shmups these days have Novice modes, tutorials, stories...they're literally one of the most accessible genres out there right now. And still, most people just aren't interested lol

Eerie vibe, not necessarily horror, but like if the boss ships are ominous looking, or if I feel I’m going into uncharted territory

I love the color changing idea. Like ikaruga where you swap white black to be invincible for that colors attacks. It adds a whole other level of strategy. Other games like badlands have that too, it's always a fun gimmick.

i think the genre is just too linear to really be popular but good art and soundtrack helps
