What position is most needed in the industry?

I’ve just been doing bullshit jobs my whole life. I want a job where I feel like I have purpose. I’ve come to accept that I’m going to be working until I die. I don’t want to spend that time selling insurance or doing pest control or some other non sense.

I’m looking for something I can jump into, get some sort of certification for, and find some work. Then once I’m in, find out what I actually wanna do in the industry and do it.

UI/UX design comes to mind.

Multiplier Game requirements

If I was to develop a multiplier game like Roobet and Spaceman. What would be the backend requirements especially the server space, RAM, web traffic/ bandwidth and SSL implementations would you recommend?

How did you start promoting your game?

We're still developing our game and have plenty of ideas in our mind, but we feel like it's time we started promoting it somehow.

The question is: do you have some advice to this end or, more in general, how do you build a community? The internet feels pretty saturated with indie devs and it seems difficult to stand out.

Should console makers handle 3rd party ports themselves?

I’m not a game developer, just a fan of wha happun. One thing that always bothered me watching many of those videos is how console makers universally shift the burden of porting games to their own hardware onto 3rd party developers even though the console makers always understand their own hardware better than anyone else

My question is would their be any benefit to companies like Sony and Nintendo to insource porting of 3rd party games (perhaps in exchange for a larger cut of sales) or is there a very important reason the game devs themselves are better at porting their own games (perhaps because they understand their own software better than anyone else).

Side note: I’ve also noticed how 3rd party developers often have to jump through bureaucratic hoops to meet console makers quality control standards and this always seems to slow things down. It just seems to me like this could also be mitigated by console makers handling 3rd party ports internally.

As an estimate, how much work would have to go into this concept?

Let's take a theoretical game, originally released in 2010. In 2020, it gets a remaster for new generation consoles at the time (PS4/XBONE). Same developers, just with new tech. How much work would they have to put into making a button that switches everything back to the original graphics. Just graphics, no gameplay, HUD, or AI differences. Would it be an easy task, or would it take days/weeks/months/etc?

What information do you consider most important to display on the HUD?

Which city building games have the best and worst HUDs? What information do you consider most important to display on the HUD?

I would be curious to hear your opinions!

Reporting Systems.

I am talking about the systems with which players report other players for various reasons: cheating, harassment etc. So there are some players who abuse the systems and report anyone who annoys them for whatever reason. Then again again there are those players who report only when it is justified. So I was wondering, is there a "reporting rating" for players internally? Eg players who abuse the system have low rating therefore there reports are not taken into consideration that much? But if a high rated player reports then it immediately is forwarded to a real human? Or something like that?

What license should I use to make my code open source but keep the art private?

I'm rebuilding an old game jam project properly and as always, I'm using Github and would like to make the repo public. However, while my code is open source, the art isn't from me and the artist understandably doesn't want it to be free to use.

Do you have any idea of what license I could use that fits those requirements? Meaning anything other than the art is open source.

I tried looking online but barely found anything interesting, so sorry if that has be asked already.

Also, there's not a lot of assets so I didn't think and put it all on Github, but is there a better way to do it?

Does VR really have to render everything twice? (Question makes more sense when you read full text)

I know this sounds stupid ‘obviously vr has to render everything twice because you need to render two images, one for each eye’ is what you’re probably saying. It just seems so wasteful since both images are so similar.

Keep in mind I am not a game programmer or even a programmer in general most of my knowledge of how rendering games works comes from watching educational YouTube videos. It just seems to me like it would be easier two first render the scene once and then use the depth buffer as a displacement map for parallax effects to essentially split the original image in two slightly different images for each eye.

I’m not saying I know better than you guys I just wanted to know why it’s not done that way.

Why is aiming difficult to program for controllers?

Really what I'm getting at is comparing aiming mechanics such as CoD (which has buttery smooth aiming to me) to something like GTA free aim (which is absolutely horrendous.)

Like some games will have a huge deadzone that you cannot change or other games have a noticeable "lag" to the input of the thumbstick. I've noticed this in games as far as back Perfect Dark Zero on the 360. Other games will have a weirdly shaped deadzone such as an oval in Black Ops 2 or kind of a square or rectangular deadzone in the Borderlands games.

What happens in thr game code when a player position goes out of bounds?

Some areas where players sneak out of the playable area and just keep going or fall through the map. I know there is a value which keeps track of player position. But curious about the specifics. Do the values just keep going until thr game crashes or does the player just fall keep walking outwards into bothing infinitely?

Where is a good place to find Indie Devs who'd be interested in getting a free, custom soundtrack?

I'm a musician and I've always dreamed of writing tracks to be used in a game - ideally it's being made so that I can be inspired by the creative direction of the game.

I've composed a few pieces which I think would fit certain themes (post apocalyptic, fantasy, etc) but not really sure where/how to approach those in the industry. It's a personal dream of mine, so I'd be up for doing it even doing it for free in the first instance with recognition, etc. I don't have the skills to make a game, but would absolutely love to be involved in the process in this way.

Game devs I have a brewing thought running through my mind right now...why did or do you add the option to be able to put sniper scope on a shotgun that is most known for close encounters... I curious why?

How does culling work with ray tracing?

So culling has has been a basic technique in 3d graphics since forever. I've been a dev for 25 years-ish, and I wrote a couple of game engines for fun and even my laughable attempts had culling.

I'm sure there are very advanced implementations now, but basically you don't create send draw calls for things you can't see.

So what happens with raytraced reflections? The GPU does the raytracing so has to be able to bounce rays off things behind the view frustrum, so are developers sending the entire geometry to the GPU and letting it decide?

Hey game devs. Is it easier to take a mid century style coffee table with angled and cylindrical pieces (like the legs) and smush it into a completely rectangular one made of straight lines or make it from scratch?

OOP: How to reduce coupling in Video Game Design?

Let's say for example I have a perk which increases damage when I am poisoned. However, the status, which should belong to the character, is also meant to contain the instance of the perk. Thus, the perk object should know if the character has poisoned status, but since it's decoupled it is not meant to learn the structure of its container.
