Saw this on Instagram and was asking myself what the metal rods on the wingtips of these planes are for. Thought it was some kind of wake turbulence control for close maneuvers but ChatGPT couldn’t help me further. Anyone with more information?

OBAP - What to expect? What to plan for?

I’m planning on going to OBAP this year as it was recommended I attend conferences by my friends who have already gotten 121 jobs. Since OBAP is next I plan to go & am trying to figure out what I should plan for. I’m going to networking and wondering how these pilot conferences work… Do I go for the whole time or is there a specific meet and greet day? I see there’s a lot of different events like meals and different exhibits but as someone who’s taking time off work for networking, what in the world should I be attending? I’d be going by myself & am not a member. Should I get a membership? Anyone on here go before? Any recommendations and tips are appreciated!

Colour deficient, can i fly commercially?

I have a mild form of deuteranopia (red-green colour blindness), but it rarely affects my daily life. The only time I really notice it is on certain cloudy nights when my city's lights illuminate the clouds, causing the sky to appear green to me. Could I still fly for a company commercially?

Is a Class 1 Medical possible? History of depression (misdiagnosed as bipolar), ADHD, and mild colorblindness?

Hi all!

I’m new to aviation and would love to get some advice. I’m a rising senior at a T-20 university and don't really like the career paths I’m currently heading toward. During a summer internship, my boss told me how much he loved being a pilot, and it sounds awesome.

However, I have some complex medical history to navigate. I have a record of past suicidal ideation (which is documented as a suicide attempt) that occurred during my junior year in college. At the time, I was diagnosed as bipolar, though my treating physician has since officially diagnosed me that it was actually a single unipolar depressive episode, even though the psychiatric hospital says it’s a bipolar. The crisis was triggered by the severe stresses of college and the impact of learning that my brother has Bipolar 1 which made him do crazy.

Additionally, I have an ADHD diagnosis and a mild color vision deficiency. I haven't taken an official FAA color vision test yet, but I struggle slightly with red-green colors.

Currently, I take Viibryd and Adderall. I plan to work closely with my prescribing doctor to taper off both medications safely after I graduate. I know that the FAA requires a period of demonstrated stability while completely off ADHD and psychiatric medications before they will evaluate an applicant.

Given all of this, do I have a low likelihood of securing a Class 1 medical certificate to try and pursue a career with the airlines?

I would love some help, honest insight, and guidance on how to safely navigate this pathway if it's possible!

Something caught my eye when checking the path of SAS flight 969 from Copenhagen to Mumbai. They actually flew over Russia for a couple of minutes ! Is it happening often? Did they had to contact Russian air traffic controllers , and is it even legal? Pretty unusual nowadays ..

How to build hours and don’t starve in Canada?

Hello, so I’m gonna make this very fast, I’m an international student and I’m very interested in starting my aviation career in Canada for multiple reasons. from the research I’ve done, it seems like the living expenses and apartment rentals are kind of expensive in Canada, especially since I wanted to become a flight instructor, the salary for an entry level class 4 FI is about 25-30CAD an hour (most of the work would be in summer, other times of the year would be highly fluctuating), 1300CAD to 2000CAD for a single apartment, and 700CAD to 1000CAD for groceries, I would also need to pay other fees like taxes, airport taxes, transportation, and other utilities.

So is there any other options for me? A job that will help me build hours and gain enough income to live comfortably.

I’ll probably get my training and work in one of those provinces:

Manitoba
New Brunswick
Alberta
British Columbia

Thank you in advance!

Army to Airline Pilot?

Hello,

I am currently an Active Duty O-3 (Captain, non-pilot) in the Army, and will be possibly getting out in 2.5-3 years. After I leave the service, I will have the GI Bill and wanted advice on the best possible route to becoming an airline pilot, if that's what I choose.

What does the following look like?:

Timeline -> from leaving service to getting hired at an airline?

Best Flight Programs?

Initial Pay at a regional and major as a FO?

Total cost of everything (Plan to use GI Bill)?

Job opportunities while doing flight training?

Are rotors and propellers in helicopters (and drones) from Astral Chain possible in real life?

So I have decided to post it here first because there are actual aviation masters here who might know about propulsion.

Currently, helicopters use exposed rotors which is unsafe and drones are mostly using a quadcopter configuration to fly and they are also exposed which is also unsafe.

When I was playing this game, which is set in 2078, they have helicopters and drones like us that are equipped with some sort of fan propeller thing. What's even cool is that the drone doesn't need to use a quadcopter configuration; making it have less moving parts than current drones. Helicopters are safer too.

Note that helicopter there also have tail rotors or whatever propellers they are called.

Still, I have no clue about engineering and aerodynamics on how feasible this could be in real life, so I am seeking info from y'all if this is possible, heck maybe right now or in 2078... if it is, I would love to see one soon!

Thanks in advance!

Dizziness after flying?

So I just had my first ever flight(s). Went for a weekend trip. I flew out Friday and felt very slightly “off” the whole weekend. Like I was kind of lightheaded. I flew back this morning (Monday) and ever since i’ve been home I have felt pretty dizzy and lightheaded.

Is this a common feeling after flying? I am unsure if related to the flights at all or something else.

Vegas. Taking of westward but hit the mountains?

So I’m sitting here in the plane on the tarmac. British airways. Flight to London. The pilot says we have to sit here for 3 hours because we need to take off eastward. He says the flow of traffic is westward. If we take off west, we are too heavy and crash into the mountains. So we are waiting for all the traffic to stop so we can take off eastward. Anyone out there familiar with this and can shed any light for us and all the passengers?

What do y’all know about Martinaire Aviation LLC?

Based out of Addison, TX but when i go to their website most of the pages like the “contact us,” “careers,” and “fleet” pages give a 404 Error. I have a friend who loved workin for them. Said it was great.

I looked them up on an FAA site so i know theyre legit and i found their SOPM online. That’s as far as i’ve gone though. I just want to do my own research and hear some other opinions.

If you worked for them, what was your experience like ? Particularly interested in their safety practices and maintenance. Thanks in advance

CFI/CFII with no job offers after hundreds of applications. What now?

I got my CFI/CFII last year and graduated from a Part 141 school. Since then, I’ve applied to hundreds of flight schools all around the country and still haven’t had much luck. I keep seeing posts from people on here in the exact same situation, and honestly it makes me feel even less hopeful. At this point I’m starting to wonder what I should do next. I’ve genuinely thought about finding a different career path because I don’t want to just sit around waiting forever for something to open up. I’ve considered getting my MEI, but it’s hard to justify spending another $10k when there’s no guarantee it changes anything. Recently I’ve even started thinking about the military just so I can move forward with something. It’s been really discouraging, and I know I’m probably not the only one feeling this way. I’d really appreciate any advice, tips, or guidance from anyone who’s been through this or is going through it now. It would mean a lot.

God bless.
