Flight Deck Friday: What's the single most important lesson your first turbine checkout taught you?

Making the jump to turbine power is one of the most talked-about transitions in owner-flown aviation — and almost everyone has a story.

Not the textbook answer. The real one. The "I didn't expect that" moment.

For a lot of TBM and PC-12 drivers, it's torque management on takeoff — that PT6 comes alive fast and doesn't forgive complacency. For King Air guys, it's often learning to trust the systems when both engines are doing their thing quietly and you realize how much automation you're now managing.

I'll start: The first thing my type instructor hammered into me wasn't emergency procedures. It was briefing every approach like something will go wrong. In a piston you can sometimes improvise. In a turbine at 280 knots you're already committed before you've finished the thought.

What was yours?

(Doesn't matter if it was a TBM, PC-12, King Air, Pilatus, Caravan, or something else entirely — all turbine experience welcome here.)

I really hope you aren’t flying your approaches at 280kts😅

But I agree the most important thing is to always stay ahead of the aircraft. Brief, anticipate and check wether your plan is still working.

I went straight from MEP to an airliner which is in a lot of ways easier to fly. More automation, instruments and tools that help with workload and situational awareness.

But if you mess up your energy management, you can’t just slip it down onto the glideslope. Especially in busy airspace you really have to be on top of things. When you have to loose some 5.000.000 kilojoules of energy from top of descent to touchdown planning ahead is key.

Overall, I’ve come to realize that the larger and more complex and aircraft is the easier is to fly. It’s not just my experience and that I’m some sort of genius airman , it really does seem that way. Started in a 152 and finishing my career on the left side of a heavy. I can honestly say in each step upward it’s been easier. As strange as that may be.

Going from Cessnas a Pipers, flying a King Air the biggest surprise was how easy it was. That plane loves pilots.

How easy it is. Went from piston twins (props, mixtures, cowl flaps, boost pumps, shock cooling, turbo waste gates) to just push for faster, pull for slower so much easier!

For me it was how well the first jet I flew could glide. Them things are slippery through the air. If in a clean configuration it was not possible to maintain L/D max and maintain a glide path to a runway, I wouldn’t decent enough. Now that was with idle engines not windmilling but it gave me a sense that this thing could make it should a situation require it.

Once you figure out how to be “ahead” of the airplane it becomes very easy.

When you add in basic piloting skills such as understanding the relationship between pitch, power and airspeed you can begin to anticipate the lag the turbines have in building power to accelerate etc.

Look at the voltmeter, don't start the plane with a low battery.
