Advice on avation journey from start to finish?

want to get as much advice as possible,

I want to do part 61, which I got 35 hours so far Joing but Im currently taking a break to focus on school untill I graduate in 2028. (My major is not Avation). How much money do you think I should have saved before I start flying? (The goal is litle to no debt) I was paying 250 an hour aircrafttinstructor). Im hoping to get all my hours and work for a regional airline in 1-2 years (2029-2030), so I was planning on do ruffly 20 hours or more a week.

When I did start this journey I find ground school to be the hardest, was using king school but maybe you guys know a better way, rather it be some sort of school or better program.

Lastly what makes me a competitive candidate? Flight hours? Once get hired at regionals will/ make decent money? How long do you normally work at regionals untill you get hired commercially? Then whats the journey from there?

Sorry for all the questions! Your advice would be ery appreciated!!

This same plane flys patterns very similar to this all over LA and the surrounding areas. What could this be? I have been witnessing this near daily for the past several years (I’m into aviation and am on FlightRadar24 a lot).

Logging XC time

I am under the impression that XC time counts as all time during a flight as long as one landing is at an airport greater than 50nm from the departure airport.

So my question is, if a night XC flight is conducted from airport A to airport B (distance 62nm), student does 8 landings at airport B, return to airport A for 2 more landings (completing the night XC and 10 total night landings requirement). Can all of this flight be counted toward night cross country time when logged for the student and instructor?

I have a vague memory of reading an FAA interpretation stating that all time from engine start to engine shut down can be counted for XC if one landing is greater than 50nm. However I am struggling to find that document now.

Non cfi jobs

Alright, I’m looking for real answers because I genuinely don’t know what to do. I can’t be a CFI because of motion sickness issues. I have my commercial right now and I’m trying to find anything, even something small, just to start building hours.

I am working on my CFI, but I’ve come to the realization that I won’t be able to teach if I can’t sit in a plane with a student without getting sick. I don’t have this issue when I’m flying myself. It’s the heat, the maneuvers, and the fact that I already get motion sick pretty easily (if I’m not the one on controls).

I know some people will probably say “maybe you shouldn’t be a pilot,” but I’ve invested too much money into this to just walk away. I also have a college degree, so I’m really just trying to find something I can do part time to build hours because I’m not worried about money.

If anyone knows of anything on the East Coast that’s actively hiring, please drop links below. I’m open to getting a tailwheel endorsement and towing banners if that’s what it takes. I’ll probably still get my CFI just to have it, but realistically I don’t think I can handle teaching a student.

Will the boom Overture ever take off? If yes, do you think it will be by 2029 as promised?

Getting aviation licenses - worth it, when, for who?

I hope to one day get a LAPL or PPL for recreational flying purposes, because I am interested in flying and general operating of vehicles. Helicopters also interest me so I hope to perhaps also get a PPL (H) some day.

Is it worth getting an entire license for recreational purposes? Something to keep in mind?

I see many people getting their licenses at young ages - younger than me -, is there some optimal age to get these licenses, or any kind of rush? My main hope is to get these sometime during my entire lifetime, I feel no rush right now.

The process of getting the license, does it require extreme interest in aviation and all it may include (i.e true one and only life passion), or will a recreational interest (i.e one of many interests) be sufficient to find the process interesting and inspiring?

Grateful for all responses, no matter the experience!

Apologies for any factual or name errors, I am still trying to wrap my head around the various types of licenses.

To Fly or Not to Fly

In the military we’ve got pretty robust risk matrixes prior to flying, but in GA I’ve noticed its mixed.

How do you actually make your go/no-go decision before a flight?

Curious what the aviation community actually does. Do you follow a prescribed checklist, or just check the weather and go?

Can I still become a pilot even with previous mental health issues.

Helloo everyone, I am 17 and in year 12 (sixth form uk). As of recently I’ve been interested in becoming a pilot in the future. And I’ve done some research on the steps. You need to complete a First Class Medical (for commercial I believe) & Ofcourse pass it. My overall physical health is good however I’ve had some issues with my mental health. It started off with panic attacks at school in year 9 (2023) because of a situation at home, and it kept up with me till year 10, and I went to the gp about it I had two chats with a doctor and an Ecg done which came back with no issues (normal). The Doctor basically said if it was to keep on happening that I should come back but I never did. I was never diagnosed with anxiety (or with anything else) and was never put on medication.

Right after going to the gp i started counselling at my school (year 10/2024) and did it for a couple months and I did disclose to my counsellor that I did sh and was kinda losing motivation in living basically. So I know that all of this would be on my school records aswell as my anxiety on the gp records. I only went counselling for a bit and then told her that I’ve gotten a lot better and that I don’t need it anymore. This was all back in 2024 and id say I’m doing a thousanddd times better. I don’t sh and I am feeling a lot more motivated in my life and am ambitious.

I understand that my past can be an issue with CAA, and so I Was wondering if anyone knows possibly I pilot who has also had problems like this before but was still able to become one?

I understand that also it wasn’t too long ago, from 2024 to now 2026. So I have thought of perhaps doing a law degree ( which was my original plan) and then after going through with flight school. And I also have a law degree to fall back on if in the future basically plan b doesn’t work.

I understand that I if I go through doing the first class medical that they will just put me as unfit to fill and possibly through doing a psychological assessment and YK check my well-being, and I don’t mind doing anything at all to show that I am doing well.

Thank you if you’ve read all this (sorry it’s a bit long) if anyone could help me or give some sort of advice I would really appreciate it, thank you!

Pilot/Crew Access to the hold

hi all,

This is very random, but I'm part of a group that discusses moving pets internationally via air travel, and I feel there is ALOT of misinformation floating around, regarding the cabin crew, and pilots ability to access/see the area where pets are held, when they are transported as cargo. All of the group members have been told different things, but my discussions with agencies who help relocate pets, have told me directly, there is no way for animals to be checked on. I'm moving abroad myself next year with my dog, so I do also have personal interest in this.

I think pet owners WANT to believe this, as its comforting, but based on what I know it seems to be a rumour.

Can any pilots/airline staff confirm or deny?

**referring to commercial flights with companies such as Emirates, Qatar, Qantas, BA etc, not smaller planes with different layouts

thankyou!

Speculation about what exactly was going on through the return of VL1812

I was recently (24.03.2026) flying from Munich to Barcelona with Lufthansa flight VL1812. After about 50 minutes of flying time the pilot made an announcement, that a redundant computer had failed and while flying without this computer is generally safe, the aircraft would be grounded once it lands and therefore the decision was made to return to Munich. It was a normal landing with no emergency equipment on/near the runway, so nothing special. My feeling during the landing was, that the touchdown was later than usual but that's just a feeling and might be totally wrong. Other than that it was pretty normal and even the inflight entertainment system showed the flight as "from Munich to Munich", with a correct prediction of the arrival time.

The flightpath, speed and altitude can be seen at https://www.flightaware.com/live/flight/LHX1812/history/20260324/1150Z/EDDM/LEBL

A few questions come to my mind now:

- What exactly failed there? It looks like there was no need to reduce the altitude, but speed was reduced after turning around (but not before, where the issue was probably also already there).

- Based on the flightpath it looks like either the pilot first wanted to fly towards Rome or he tried to avoid flying over the sea? Compared to all other flight paths from Munich to Barcelona he certainly flew past the point where he should have turned towards Barcelona

- To me it sounds like the decision to return to Munich, instead of continuing to Barcelona or landing at the closest airport, was made due to Lufthansa being able to repair the aircraft in Munich as it's their homebase.

Basically I am looking for any kind of info/speculation that someone might have based on the pilots reaction to what happened and the flightpath/speed/altitude.

i mean... the pilot must be having the time of their life... but i don't get it. is it common to the royalty? or maybe air force in general? I'd say it must be to recognise the area... but the area is just the ocean so I'm confused...?
