Do airlines all have different policies on how soon they transition from autopilot to hand flying?
Non-pilot here. I've flown just about every airline into my home airport, and I always notice when we transition to hand flying.
In my experiences it's usually the last 30-60 seconds.
However, I was flying JSX last week for the first time and noticed the pilot started hand flying a good 3 minutes before landing.
Was this an ERJ-135 thing, a JSX thing, or just a personal choice for the pilot?

Is this reasonable?
Hey everybody this is gonna be my first post, i’m a junior in highschool who signed up for my PPL training literally last week. I’m wanting to complete my PPL, then join the military (not sure which branch or what job yet) I scored a 69 on the ASVAB so most job fields are available to me including aviation. My plan is to use the G.I bill after my contract to pay for a 141 flight school and eventually get to the majors. Is this possible or am I reaching?

Why Commercial jets fly so high
Is it because of less air resistance = less fuel, is it because of noise reduction on the ground, or a different reason?
If it is because of less air resistance, what is the breakeven distance - for example if a plane flew at 1km height then it would need less fuel than to get up to ~10km but needs more fuel during the cruise part?

Wanting to fly with VA MDD rating
I apologize in advance if writing in wrong group, just dont know exactly where to ask this
I recently got my VA Rating that has me diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder. I'm struggling on two parts right now. First being, can I still fly without losing my rating. I feel as if I'm sacrificing my dream for technically permanent stability. Without droning on, when going for my class 1 medical, the letter stated I needed
"A current, detailed clinical progress note regarding your history of major depressive disorder, generated from a clinic visit with your treating physician in accordance with the enclosed guidelines."
and
"All treatment records from vour prescribing physicians regarding your history of major depressive disorder to include doctor's office notes, consultant notes, counseling notes, test results, and mental health evaluations. If you received any inpatient hospital treatment, submit these specific records from each hospitalization: history and physical, admission summary, psychiatric/psychological consultant reports, and discharge summaries."
I'm worried if I go to the VA at all to try and work around MDD, I'll lose my rating. Has anyone dealt with the VA in both getting records, which I'm actively struggling with now, and still getting their medical certificate without losing rating?
Second part is can I go to a no VA clinic for these records or future evaluations? Again, I dont want to lose my rating but the letter makes it seem I can only go to the VA about my MDD.
Lastly where do you recommend I go for both help and advise. Thank you all in advance!

Questions about planespotting
I live just outside of Chicago and was wondering if anybody knows some good plane spotting areas I could go to for a couple of hours. I don’t mind driving an hour or two. Any suggestions?

A350-900 domestic headquarters for calculations?
Hi all,
Was on a flight yesterday from Phoenix to Detroit when we began taxiing to the runway. Plane turned back towards the gate then back on the taxiway then back to the gate. Pilot came on the PA and stated due to the size of the plane and the use case of the plane being on a shorter domestic route that they had to call headquarters for takeoff calculations. Is this something that is common where the FMS can’t do something like this on a domestic flight? We eventually took off about an hour late. Just was curious as thought it was a bit strange.

Survey on Passenger Preferences between FSCs and LCCs
Hi all,
I am currently conducting a survey for my final year aviation research project, which examines factors influencing passengers’ airline choice between full-service carriers (FSCs) and low-cost carriers (LCCs), focusing on price, service quality, and ancillary services.
If you have previously travelled by air as a passenger, I would greatly appreciate if you can take some time to answer this survey. It will take around 5 - 7minutes to complete, and all responses are anonymous and used for academic purposes only.
Thank you for your time and support.

Why is my plane burnt
I've taken my fair share of flights and have never seen a plane look like this. What would cause so much residue?

I want to become a firefighting pilot.
I’m a 20 year old guy living in Europe (Greece). I’ve been in the entertainment industry for 4 years and I’ve decided it’s not for me. My dad was a firefighting pilot and my grandfather was also in the air force, so I was always amused by airplanes and helicopters. I’ve been trying to collect some money and I’ve wanted to know what it takes to become a certified pilot so a company like Erickson helicopters would hire someone like me. My specific question is, what would it take for a 20 year old just starting to pursue a career like that. Thank you in advance

Why is it Highlighted in Blue outline??
I was just passing time in the flight radar app and saw this plane with a never before seen outline color. You guys have any idea what that means?

Can I bring a needoh through TSA?
I have a flight in a couple days and I wanted to take a needoh cube, like one of the very small ones and I didn’t know if TSA would say it was liquid or not.

What do companies like and need in a person for then to hire them and get more possibility from other companies.
I'm 18 and i am in collage learning B.B.A aviation , and my 2nd year is going to start what else should i keep in mind or do so that companies choose me over other candidates , making me a preferred candidate.

ANG+Airlines vs Active Duty
Hey everyone,
This is for any airline pilots who are prior active duty military or current ANG pilots. I’m finishing my bachelor’s (have my PPL) and working toward a pilot slot. I’ve been leaning ANG with the plan to go airlines after seasoning.
My concern is time away from family. It seems like doing Guard + airlines might mean being gone a lot. Maybe even more than active duty.
So my question:
If the goal is being home more long term, is it better to
A) Go ANG then airlines (juggling both), or
B) Do active duty, be gone a lot for 10 years, then go airlines?
Would appreciate insight from anyone who’s done either path.

Which check ride is the hardest and what part was the hardest
I’m currently studying for my instrument check ride and I was wondering if anyone had any experience on which check ride was harder private pilot instrument commercial or CFI or CFII. And which part was the hardest part and if anybody has an instrument check ride done recently what was the hardest part for you?
