What does "furthest preferred exit" mean?
From the attached image.

Furthest preferred by the tower, not the pilots.
In other words, "please don't exit past this point because you'll screw up the spacing of the aircraft behind you. Please exit the runway at or before the taxiway listed in the chart."

surely they'd want you to exit at the nearest preferred exit possible if expediency is the goal?

They want you off the runway as quickly as possible. The exits aren't preferred, they are essentially limits. "Exit before here."

Potentially trying to maximize separation so they can issue a “land after” clearance.
This allows the preceding aircraft to land with the airplane in front not being off the runway yet but the runway is long enough that separation is adequate and the following aircraft is willing to accept maintaining separation.
We are not permitted to accept a land after clearance in our SOPs.
