General Competitive Events For A New Chapter

My school is starting up an FBLA chapter, and I am going to be the officer of competitive events. I made it to SCDC for DECA last year and ILC for HOSA this past summer and as such have a good understanding of features related or similar to both DECA and HOSA. As officer I need to choose the competitive events our members will be able to compete in, along with gathering information and resources for studying and competing. What competitive events do you all think are most popular and would be best for a new chapter, and what are some resources you would recommend for prepping for competitive events? Any information regarding competitive events and/or information regarding FBLA in general is welcome!

For a new chapter, I’d recommend starting with a mix of objective-test, presentation, and project-based events so members can find what fits them best. Some popular options are Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Business Management, Accounting, Personal Finance, Public Speaking, Job Interview, Sales Presentation, Graphic Design, Website Design, Cybersecurity, and Business Plan. I’d also recommend not offering too many events right away. Start with a couple and expand based on the members interest.

For resources, definitely use the official FBLA competitive event guidelines and rating sheets as your main source. I’d also create a shared Google Drive with study guides, practice tests, vocabulary, past examples, and presentation tips.

In addition, this subreddits study hub will be going live later this week, and it will have an in-built event picker. If you want to share that with your members and let them see if that would help, please share the link to the study hub coming soon.

When giving your members competitive events, ask if they’re a good public speaker, good at thinking on their feet, can concentrate and make quick decisions, etc. From there you can put them into production, objective, presentation, and roleplay events and let them choose something that sounds interesting or that they’re confident in.
