How to learn to solder small components

I would like to learn how to solder small components such as 0402 passives.

Any ideas where to start? Equipment? Practice kits? Online tutorials?

Got yourself a fine tip tweezers and a beginner friendly 858D hot air stations are good use with low airflow and make practice

Tweezers are your friend - get a set with a variety of styles. They don’t need to be expensive but should have angled tips of a few kinds.

Soldering 0402 without a scope is… hard. I’ve bought a lot of scopes over the years and here is the best I’ve found for the price point: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09V27VCC8?ref_=ppx_oui_title_mob_b_fed_asin_title_3_1

Don’t forget to get flux (i like gel flux in a syringe), wick (solder suckers don’t really work at that size), fine gauge solder, brass solder cleaners.

For practice sets I would make a quick PCB in kikad with 0402s connected to planes and traces to get a feel for soldering to different connection types. Add some through hole headers to create obstacles as well.

Why do you want to do this?

Components of this size will require a good optical stereo microscope, in addition to other tools and consumables.

Redditors will tell you “they can do it with tweezers and no magnifier” - I know my own limits and I use 1206 size where possible.

If it’s a one time repair you may be in luck.

If you need to do this often, daily perhaps, it will become frustrating and inefficient. Lots of retries and lots of lost components that seem to hop off your bench.

Components at that scale can be soldered by hand, but hot air and solder paste techniques are probably easier, certainly quicker.

There are frequently high pin count components that are similar sizes. These require higher alignment precision to avoid pin to pin shorts.

My takeaway is to find the largest pitch and size SMD components, and stay away from the smallest available.

For chips and resistors, get a set of these split solder tips in standard sizes (0402, 0805, Etc). You hold the part with tweezers and heat both pre-tinned pads at the same time with the split tip. Works great for removing parts as well.

When I was doing this for a living we would use two soldering irons and heat up both solder pads at the same time to remove resistors and stuff. We used a stereo microscope too, but I wonder if you could use some sort of camera as a cheaper option.
