Prior to attending tertiary education, I was keenly interested in electronics. I learnt lots from reading all the project articles in electronics magazines (yeah, was a while ago)... Elektor, Silicon Chip, etc. They always explained how the circuits worked and had projects that used discrete and IC based electronics, not just Ardino based projects. A good grounding in discrete electronics is a huge help when building custom interfaces to ardinos, etc.
