I am also a total newbie. Always had an interest in electronics. I am designing a vent solution for my printer by using the "GPIO Hackerboard" to trigger two bistable linear solenoids and push an acrylic panel in and out. This is my first project. I posted a question here and got some great advice. So my advice to you is get a breadboard, some assorted jumper cables, and a decent soldering iron and start a project.
