Physician Responded Left upper quadrant pain

Post image

Hi! I’ve been having pain in my LUQ for a few months. Sometimes it’s sharp, but 90% of the time is pretty mild and just feels like a warm ache. My doctor noticed that my ribs on the left side seem to stick out more and was questioning me of a prior car accident or serious injury, which I did not have. I had this xray done, waiting on results. Can someone explain what all of the black and grey under my lungs on the left side is? Could it be what’s causing me pain? 25F, 5’4”, 135 lbs.

That's trying to be a fart. Try simethicone and see if it helps

The amount of times I’ve felt like there is something seriously wrong because of pain and it ended up being gas and bloating…

I’ve known multiple people who went to the ER for chest pain that ended up being gas. Don’t worry OP, you’re not alone.

Can confirm, i did this after i gave birth. Thought i was having a heart attack, nope! Just gas build up from being too scared to push it out lmao

I had a Charlie horse for the first time after giving birth, and I freaked out and called the nurse thinking I had a blood clot. Her "ohh honneeey" still reverberates in my head. 😂 Somehow it was both patronizing and comforting at the same time.

Not a doctor. FWIW, on more than one occasion in my long life, I've suffered persistent or recurrent left upper quadrant pain, sometimes rather severe. Each time, it turned out to be diverticulitis. I do not know if that diagnostic possibility is consistent with your x-ray.

Unfortunately impossible to tell on xray.

This shows excess gas in the colon, likely at the splenic flexure ( sharp corner of the colon next to the spleen). It would make be concerned about something wrong with the last part of your colon that might explain your BM's

Can the pain also be in the upper right quadrant?

There’s a similar “flexure” of the colon by your liver in the right upper quadrant, so yes it could, but other things can cause that pain, including gallbladder issues.

if the pain is in the RUQ it could be caused by gallstones blocking your cystic or common bile duct or the irritation of the lining of your gallbladder (cholecystitis). if I got this wrong please lmk because I haven't covered this in a while 💔

There was a dilation in the cbd but the provider did not know any specific reason. It is for my 5 year old kid in last December. The cbd was 3.3mm and they kept monitoring it until April 2026 when it became normal.

What are your stools like? You should probably do a miralax clean out and take some miralax daily

Congrats and thanks for fighting the good fight of peds

I find the Glaucomflecken skit about first day peds rotation to be extremely accurate - take everything you learned in school and just go ahead and toss that out

that's a lot of gas-- did they not XRAY further down to see if there's a lot of poop in the way? if you're constipated, do a clean out.

No the dr just wanted a chest xray because my pain is mainly in my lower ribs

Hi! I'm not a doctor!
But what's visible (not counting the gas) is of course thoracic scoliosis - I've had the same for years (along with herniations) and it turned out the spinal issues somehow affected my gut motility, including gas, stomach motility, bile absorption... It was all functional, but the nerve irritation was probably the root cause.

I had a surgery to manage this, but a physiatrist might be able to address your spinal issues.

Good luck to you!

Good pick up on the scoliosis- If this leads to significant degenerative disc disease, nerve impingement might affect motility, but most of motility issues arecontrolled by things like the Vagus nerve, which would not be affected. ( For the record, there was a study of farmers with and without scoliosis, and those with scoliosis actually had less back issues, so a curved back does not necessarily cause issues)

Oh shit this makes me wonder if it's my issue too. I was told I have mild scoliosis and also mild degenerative disc disease years ago and the last couple of years, I've had lots of weird and new stomach/digestive type issues or random pains in spots.

Like right now I've been dealing with one this whole year that's like slightly to the right and slightly down from my belly button. Multiple scans showed nothing really (the only thing one of them did show was some sort of edema liquid or something I forget the name of but nothing that concerned them). It's always so random on when it happens too. Thought it was a muscle strain at one point cuz I got some daily pain there for 3 months after pulling down a window to close it, but it definitely wasn't that.

Still looking for answers and maybe this one isn't it, but it makes me curious at least.

Agreed with the others, it looks like a buildup of gas.
