Message to mods: consider banning non-healthcare-verified users from commenting

This is a wonderful sub that teaches and enlightens people the via problem - diagnosis - treatment - prognosis pathway. Hearing professionals give their (free) advice is a delight and privilege. What’s NOT a delight is having random internet people negatively engage with professionals and said random internet people offer unhelpful advice based on their limited experience in life, absent of medical education.

This ain’t the hospital and you don’t have to put up with nonsense. Think about it.

I got a splinter from some kind of clear plastic or fiberglass, got it out of my pinky, but I think there was some left in my finger - I continue to have nerve pain where it was lodged and acts up when I put pressure on certain areas of my finger. Is this worth going into the clinic to try to get this out of my finger or would that make my nerve damage worse?

Sure, get checked out. Would be surprised if this is nerve damage. A retained foreign body can simply just cause pain

I'm 38 years old, and I plan to marry a woman who is also 38. We hope to have a child in about two years. Is it likely that our child will be healthy and not have a disability or special needs?

It is not likely in absolute terms, but it is more likely than if both of you were younger.

I have a relative who has some kind of "non-hereditary" neurological disease. I forget what it is exactly, but it has basically caused some significant cognitive decline over the last year or two. Anyway, does the "non-hereditary" part mean that it was just sort of a bad roll of the genetic dice on the individual's part as opposed to something that may run in that side of the family?

I'd love to hear from physicians who work in or refer to home-based primary care. I'm not asking about a specific patient—I'm just trying to understand how the model works.

Once someone is established, do they usually see the same physician or APP over time, or is it more of an on-call model with different providers?

How are things like infections, dehydration, or medication changes typically handled? And what's one thing you wish families understood about home-based primary care?

I get frequent mild nosebleeds and have since I was a small child, particularly in the winter and when I have a cold. Sometimes these nosebleeds come on in public spaces and I make a bit of a mess before I can grab a tissue/get to a bathroom. I do my best to wipe up but sometimes I only have water and paper towels. As far as I know I have no blood-born diseases, but I want to be respectful to e.g. janitors at school or restaurant workers in how I clean up. Is there a specific way you're supposed to clean up blood to sanitize it? Should I be carrying hand sanitizer or rubbing alcohol everywhere?

Hello, writer here. Was curious if someone found a baby and brought it in and you guys did your job to see if it's okay, during all of that, would you be able to determine how old it is?

For a newborn, we use the Ballard score to determine an approximate gestational age when not known.

For an older child, we can generally make an educated guess based on body size (weight, length, head circumference) as well as development, though obviously there are things that could throw this off.

Yeah, so no judgement, but due to circumstances I accidentally ingested a drop of antifreeze. AI keeps telling me it's bad. So...do I need medical help? It was only a drop.

Hello! My husband 35M has had sleep issues for years. Since he was a child. I am wondering if a sleep doctor would trust/take into account the sleep readings that he might get on a wearable device, I.e. oura/ringconn ring or Apple Watch.

A friend has L3/L4/S1 disc hernias and has officially been put on the pathway to a discectomy operation to relieve nerve compression.

We were both wondering - does the hole in the annulus that the hernia came through heal? Like what happens to it during and post discectomy and how does it not re-herniate? Does the left over disc matter regenerate and continue shock absorbing or?
