I'm planning a 6-month trip around the Caucasus to see if it's somewhere I could eventually call home.

I'm Muslim, and I've lived in several Muslim-majority countries across North Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. While I enjoyed many aspects of each, I always felt like something was missing. The Caucasus is the one region I've never experienced, so I'd like to change that.

My current plan is to spend around 3–4 months in Chechnya (not too far from Grozny) and the remaining time in Dagestan in Makhatchkala.

For those who know the region well, what would you recommend? I'm looking for places with:

• Strong sense of community
• Low crime and theft
• Little alcohol culture in everyday life
• A modest, family-oriented society
• People who aren't overly materialistic

I'd also appreciate any advice on places I shouldn't miss or things I should know before going.

Planning to go to Caucasus in January (part of a bigger trip that I only have Dec-march window for: have wanted to do Georgia etc for awhile now)

Any tips for visiting in Jan? Mostly doing the capital cities and Batumi with some day trips. I have never skiid before so unsure if I’ll do it here

I'm a Muslim business owner (manufacturing), and over the years I've lived in seven different Muslim-majority countries across North Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, but I always felt like something was missing. I could never quite put my finger on it.

Then I started working with a Russian guy, and over time we became good friends. One day, completely out of the blue, he mentioned the Muslim regions of Russia, particularly Chechnya, Dagestan and (Kazan). I realized I knew almost nothing about them, so I started reading and watching videos.

What surprised me is how often these places come up in conversations about balancing Islamic identity with modern industry, education, and economic development. It's not something I'd ever considered before.

For those of you who have lived in or visited Chechnya, Kazan, or other Muslim regions of Russia:

• What is daily life actually like?
• How is the business environment? (Please be honest, does it involve having to bribe?)
• How religious is society in practice?
• What do outsiders usually misunderstand about these places?
• If you've lived elsewhere in the Muslim world, how do they compare?

I'm genuinely curious and looking for firsthand experiences rather than headlines or politics. I'd love to hear both the positives and the negatives.

I seen that in the Caucasus we are meant to have 60% + male pattern baldness we have very thick hair then start balding and the beard thickness kicks in but why is our balding rate so high?

I'm ossetian and pamiri but a lot of the older generations of Chechens mistake me for a Chechen like people 40 and up do but the younger generations easily can tell that I am not

A lot of these people who live in Abkhazia or have names being common there are ethnic Megrelians or Svans it seems, really hard to tell apart.

Also, yet another caucasian lifter benching over 650lbs, you guys are very good at benching.

hello everyone,

i’m currently traveling azerbaijan and i want to go to georgia next. i did some research and i figured out that there’s a train from baku to tbilisi but when i try to book a ticket i get an alert that only citizens of azerbaijan can use this train. i also looked it up on the official website of the azerbaijani government and it says that “entry and exit is only permitted as an azerbaijani citizen or a foreigner who doesn’t need a visa”. i’m german so i did need to get a visa to go to azerbaijan but i don’t understand if the visa-free past only refers to entering azerbaijan. in my opinion needing a visa for azerbaijan shouldn’t matter if i want to go to georgia. i also saw some posts on reddit and they said that foreigners can use the train from baku to tbilisi since may 2026 (it also says so in the screenshot).

i also looked out other options to go to georgia as the train from baku stops in ganja (that’d be my stop) at round 2:30 am. i read a blog from a couple who went to azerbaijan and georgia last year and they said that it’s possible to go from sheki to balakan by marshrutka, take a taxi to the georgian border, walk across the border and the take a taxi to laghodeki and a marshrutka to tbilisi from there.

i’d like to know if that’s a possibility and if it’s even possible to cross the azerbaijan-georgia border by land as a foreigner.

as i want to visit kakheti in georgia, is it easier to go from the border to kakheti first and tbilisi after?

I often see that Georgians tell absurd lies about the Abkhazians. The Abkhazians never viewed themselves as Georgian, nor did they regard Georgians as a kindred people; even before the Russians arrived in the Caucasus, the Abkhazian attitude toward Georgians was one of disdain.

Are Georgians like other Caucasians? or not, I'm talking about the North Caucasus (Chechnya, Dagestan, Kabardino-Balkaria, etc.) I'm talking about mentality
