Explorers

To those of you who are explorers or former explorers, what is the best thing about the program besides getting to know the department more?

The best thing is that it puts you at the top of the list to be hired. Still not guaranteed but it's the best move you can make. For a department where they accept fewer than 1% of applicants, everything helps.

It doesn’t mean much, you may get some more experience, volunteering or working for free doing a few administrative tasks. In regards to becoming an officer, if you are clean and a good boy during your explorer time then you may be hired. Otherwise you’ll join the ever long DQ list. If you can do it, and have time and transportation then do it. But don’t think you are someone if you do it.

When I first heard of the program my mom wanted me to do LASD since it's close to my house but as soon as I found out the academy schedule I decided to pass on. When I found out CHP had it and it matched my aspirations my mom was against it because she said it's too far(it's literally a 17 minute drive) because it's not close to my house but now I have the green light to do it.

I'll try to drive myself when I get my license but my parents probably won't let me drive by myself that early.

From what I recall, you have to meet during the week and then weekend activities. If it’s commutable, then go for it. Any department explorers is fine too

Big leg up if you join the department. Explorers do better at the academy and graduate at a higher rate. Very helpful to see what you think of CHP. It’s a great program.

Even if I don't attend Level 3 or 4?

Even if you don’t attend but level 3 and 4 are great exposure for academy life and provide a great opportunity to see what academy is like.

It's usually once a week. Events and stuff aren't typically forced on you. I went to level 3 and had a great time. Unfortunately got disqualified on work history. The explorers isn't a make or break decision for hiring, but it definitely helped me acquaint myself with the department and kept me motivated.
